Good CommonApp Essay Idea?

Hey guys! I’m having trouble coming up with an idea for my CommonApp essay. Can anyone tell me if this would be a good topic specifically for CommonApp? (It should be noted my intended major is Computer Engineering)

So, between sophomore and junior year, I got the chance to intern at a bid for US Senate office in my state. It was more of a voluntary capacity, as I was working with college students from several different universities (although I did work 9-5 and was officially an intern). I hadn’t yet lined up anything quite productive to do that summer, but luckily last minute my mom told me she knew someone at the campaign office willing to let me volunteer there, so I took it, even though it didn’t align with my intended major.

Anyway, here’s my essay idea. I want to write about my experience there, how it influenced me, and how the different disciplines at work helped me to figure out how I think I fit in the world, professionally and otherwise (this would be for prompt #5). Would this be an okay topic, even though its setting is not necessarily my intended major and career choice?

Sounds like an excellent topic and you don’t need to worry that it is different than your intended major. Colleges want to learn something about you that they don’t already know

Definitely a good topic! Throw in a bit about cross-disciplinary lessons and it’ll be great. Having the ability to learn from a variety of experiences can only be a good thing. Good luck!
