Hi all,

My daughter just finished her first semester at SU. Her GPA is a 3.58. Assuming she maintains that next semester, do you think she will make the cut for transfer to Newhouse? Does anyone know what the cutoff has been in past years, or have any personal stories to share about their attempts to transfer. Thanks!

Internal transfers to NH work like this: You need 30 SU credit hours (roughly 10 classes), before you can apply. You must apply before your Junior year (the sooner the better). Everyone who applies is rank ordered in terms of GPA, and then the seats are filled in that order until there are no seats left. Your daughter’s GPA is pretty good, so I would say she has a pretty good shot. Nevertheless, she should really get it up higher if she wants in for sure. She should take some easy classes this upcoming semester and ace them all. The GPA cut off changes every year based on the applicants.

She selected classes for the spring that she knows won’t be killers for her (i.e. no chemistry!). I told her she has to work her bottom off if this is what she really wants!

My daughter was in VPA and transferred into Newhouse a few years ago. (Transferring into Newhouse was the absolute BEST decision she ever made while at Syracuse) The GPA cutoff, at the time, was about a 3.8 She was told that it is usually no lower than a 3.6 so your daughter is certainly close. Let her know that if she is close, and does not make the cut, she can petition to try and get in. I don’t know what is involved with petitioning though, but it is something she can look into if needed.
