I have an weird name (Anne Hollington- that's my first name. I also have a strange last name but I'm not going to put it on here.) and I was going to write about how I've always hated my name and was teased about it as a child and I was shy and insecure. But as I got into high school I became more confident and proud of being "different". Is this too personal/dumb? Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

sounds good for a diversity question

Reminds me of another “went through a tough time but in the end, it was all okay” UNLESS you spin it in a creative way

I’m confused, I thought talking about an obstacle in life and how we got through it was a good essay topic? Doesn’t it show how you’re a better person? I don’t know! How would I make that more creative?

Am I better off just writing an essay about why I’d like to go to a certain school? Lol

I like the topic. I just went to a financial aid seminar with a guy who has a rather unusual name. He spent a few minutes warming up the audience and talked about his odd name in a lighthearted way. The bottom line is I’ll never forget that guys name! Use it, its uniquely you and Adcoms won’t be likely to forget your name

are sob stories bad or good? just wondering

It’s not a sob story. Thanks for the constructive comment though, azndarkvader.

"are sob stories bad or good? just wondering "
Bad.

I was at an admissions session on Friday and the representative was talking about the most memorable essay topics she’s read. One was from a girl who had a really interesting name. The rep said that she was so curious about her name and googled it to find out more info, but then when she got to her essay, it was all about her name and what it meant to her.

I think it could be a personal, unique topic. I’d try to stray away from the “Obstacle -> Struggle -> It’s all ok now!” format, make it more about what it means to YOU.

oh it was apart from the thread >< just a question since we’re talking about topics

would this be a good prompt also for common app: Describe an event that has occured to you and changed your personal viewpoints?
