Good idea to go to CUNY then transfer?

Well I'm thinking of going to CUNY QC or Brooklyn for its acting/drama program (financial issues) for my undergrad. Do you think its a good idea to then transfer to a prestigious acting school like USC, UC Berkeley, Tisch, Julliard, anymore please give me more information about it.

I also thinks its a good idea to study acting here in U.S. then move back to S.Korea (I'm Korean btw ^^) and start with small acting roles (because I know it would be hard with little connections) if it doesn't work as well here.

Please give me more info about this. Thank you.

Are you talking about a BA or a BFA?

For a BA (not audition based), I think your idea is a good one, if you have the stats to transfer to one of the schools you mention. I am pretty sure, though, that neither Tisch nor Julliard have BA programs.

However, it is very difficult to transfer to a BFA program, although not unheard of. My D auditioned for 8 BFA programs and was only admitted to one of them. Most of her theater peers applied to up to 20 programs and netted a few admittances. It is even more difficult to transfer.

It is a very good idea, I am not sure how doable it will be. I hope someone with experience doing such a transfer sees this post and replies.

Have you taken a look at the Theater/Drama Majors sub-forum inside the College Majors Forum? Click on “Discussion Home” in the upper-left of this screen and then scroll down to find it. The folks there will have good ides for you!

SUNY Purchase has a good acting/drama program which is in Westchester. Have you checked it out?

I also want to mention - that graduating from an acting program at a “prestigious” college doesn’t give you much of a leg up above graduating from Brooklyn College.

[Rose Bonczek](Faculty Profile | Brooklyn College) has a lot of contacts. Brooklyn College graduates do go on to make it big (think Jimmy Smits).

So particularly if you are planning on returning to Korea, I personally don’t see the advantage of going to someplace like Tisch at all.

Thank you guys. And also, do you think its a good idea then to study at QC BA Program then transfering to Brooklyn BFA Program?

The only reason I mentioned Tisch and those other schools are because they are known for their selective BFA Program (unless I’m wrong; hopefully not) in S.Korea. So I thought it might help at least a bit.

If you intend to work in Korea, you need to ask people who are working in the industry there whether or not it is useful for you to pursue a degree in theater here. If they think that you should, find out which programs here produce graduates who actually get jobs there. Everyone Korea may have heard of Tisch, but that doesn’t mean that anyone who has studied at Tisch has ever been offered a job in Korea.

You need to know if a degree is important at all. They might only care about your performance credits.
