Hey, we have an all-in-one, but we noticed that our inkjet printers ran out of ink really quickly. I looked up some stuff online and found that laser printers, in the long run, save you money because the ink lasts longer. I have several questions regarding laser printers.

Are there laser printers that are reasonable for the average college student in price (not too much above $250)? Are they comparable in price to an inkjet printer (such as the Photosmart C5280)?

Do you save a lot more money on the ink? (Is it because individual cartridges for laser printers last longer, or is it because the cartridges cost less?)

Which laser printers do you recommend?

What about laser printers that are also all-in-ones? Which ones do you recommend?

I’m looking for a printers that will be relatively cheap; it’s ok if the printer itself is slightly more expensive, but I really want my ink costs to be low (since I’ll have to pay for it).

Take a look at the multifunction monochrome laser printers made by Brother. They combine a laser printer with a fax (including pc fax capability), copier, scanner, etc. You can usually find them on sale for less than $250 and they are very fast and reliable. I've had mine for over three years without a single problem.

You just missed out on a Samsung (if I remember) Monochrome laser printer for $50. I assume you don't need the other all in one features.

You can also use the printer in the computer labs on the hill. Laser printer quality for 5 cents per page ... don't need to invest in your own laser printer yet.

for cheap ink refills, you can buy the powder stuff in bulk for cheap on ebay if you're willing to tinker around with the cartridge. or you can go to one of those cartridge recycling places that will refill it for you for like 30 bucks

We sent the older son to college with a black and white and color all in one printer. He seemed to blow through ink cartridges pretty fast.

I have a black and white Brother laser printer that I use at home for work and family stuff. The cartridge lasts about 2500 pages and can be replaced for less than $50.

This week at one of the big chain office stores, they were selling the next level up printer than what I have - and with all the rebates, it was $50. I told him he can go to the print center if he needs to print in color. So much more cost effective, and it doesn't take up much space on a desk. It was a Brother 2140, I believe.

Saw that a while ago too. Was thinking " HOLY **** " but I didn't need another one. hahaha

I would opt to get it refilled by someone as opposed to doing it myself. The toner dust stuff is pretty toxic from what I heard, and I wouldn't risk breathing that stuff in. I've had major success with refilling inkjet carts, canons mostly, but I hate inkjets in general.

Yes, you can find a really good one for around 250ish.

Saves TONS OF MONEY vs inkjets. Quality and speed is way better too. Plus water spilling all over and making the ink run is less of an issue also.

They vary A LOT. I have a canon imageclass mf3240 all in one. Only complaint is that it does not have an auto feed tray. Also the laser printer I have in my dorm is the HP laserjet 1018. Love that thing. Recommend both for reliability.

Laser all in ones are ****ing huge. I've never seen a small one, unlike their inkjet counter parts. But IMO it is worth the space it takes up. Just take it into consideration for your dorm.

But yeah, with a 250 budget, you have a lot of options.

Check out newegg/amazon/slickdeals, for deals.

i have a hp laserjet 1022 in my room, me and my roommates went through 2 toners last year, but fast reliable printing was the way to go, especially if you have like 15 minutes until class and you still need to print a 10 page paper...

You guys are awesome! Thanks, I've looked into all of the stuff you guys posted - my parents and I are going computer + printer shopping tomorrow. :)
