good math programs?

Which schools have good undergraduate math programs?

I've been looking all over the site, and most answers I get are the usual suspects: HYPSM, Chicago, Berkeley, Caltech, Harvey Mudd, Reed, etc. etc.

I'm looking for lesser known schools that have good or great math depts such as Williams or SUNY Stony Brook.

Northwestern, GTech, Rutgers, PennState, Rice, Brandeis, OhioState, UTexas-Austin, Purdue, UMaryland-CP

Most of the large universities will have good math depts. And there is another thread in this forum about math at LACs.

Also NYU, Illinois, Minnesota, St. Olaf (MN), Reed (OR), Whitman and Holy Cross (MA).

The mathematics department at Holy Cross is very challenging. Based on personal experience ;->

Princeton has the best math program, hands down

^ Math 55ers at Harvard would beg to differ

holy cross

^^^ Calc 221ers at Rice would beg to differ.

The question wasn’t who has the best department, but who has strong programs, and all of the schools listed so far are good choices.

I agree with ib612. Princeton has some of the most famous mathematicians in the world, including Andrew Wiles and John Conway, among others, teaching undergraduates. We even learned about those guys in one of my high school math classes.

One freshman math class does not a department make.

Not that Harvard math is at all lacking.

Grad program rankings=/=undergrad program rankings. It really depends on what you are looking for. At a large undergrad, GSIs/TAs will oftentimes teach your sections, even if the program has a top-ranked program. This was true at Berkeley when I was there. You will be learning most of the material yourself. Don’t expect to ever really interact with your professors.

However, large universities are the best places for graduate students. As a graduate student, you get the best treatment, and the universities provide you with vast resources.

Btw, I’m not sure how most of these posters are coming up with their responses. At least for graduate math programs, here are the official rankings (click on the link for more, because I’m too lazy to post all of them):

 1. MIT
 2. Harvard
 3. Princeton
 4. Stanford
 5. UC Berkeley
 6. University of Chicago
 7. Cal-tech
 8. University of Michigan
 9. UCLA
 10. Columbia
 11. NYU
 12. Yale
 13. Cornell
 14. Brown
 15. UT-Austin

^^ I explicitly said that I wanted schools that were not the “usual suspects” aka what you listed. I’m looking for lesser known schools that have good math programs.

^ If you keep reading on the link ericsson provided, you’ll find some.
