Good news for the State of Michigan

Mich. finally gets good news with small car plant - Yahoo! News

Ok, so it is just one tiny piece of the problem, but it is great news nevertheless.

^If GM can survive until 2011, even with gov’t funding… :(

But either way, imo Michigan should diversify its economy instead of being so dependent on the auto industry in order to become a stronger state.

GM should just close. as my operations modeling professor said, Keeping unprofitable business running is unethical.

it’s unprofitable bc of UAW. Henderson should just tell the UAW to F-off and deal with the lawsuits. I think it’s a bit ridiculous that my father and g-father who were white collar workers at GM back when they were making money (before it was solely from GMAC) are now are getting screwed on retirement. GM will be fine and makes great cars now. Along with chrysler and Ford - most are better then the asian and soon to be indian markets. They just need to be smart with the marketing campaigns and convey that to the american public.

“Along with chrysler and Ford - most are better then the asian”

Reliability statistics (done by third party) doesnt say so.

I agree with deuspatri

The UAW is what really ruined the big three. Without them, I think we won’t even be in this bad of a recessions (although we still might be one, just not this bad). I mean look at foreign car company, their worker’s aren’t complaining and they get good wages. Big three? UAW causes the big three to advance slowly, and so no progress done, and then downfall.

^Speaking of UAW, I hate their president. Negotiating wages when the companies are in danger of shutting down in the name of protecting workers!?!?! Like who would rather have lower wages than no job!?

UAW ruined those companies. There should be a court order to dismantle or shut them down.

I think UAW just wants to get more money, they don’t think about the fact that GM is cutting people because of them. Also they probably don’t think about the fact that if GM liquidates, their jobs are on the line.

I agree that the UAW has hurt the auto industry in the US. The problem with American unions is that they do not trust management, in part due to management greed over the decades. You lead by example I suppose. All management cares about is their bonuses. Even when major IBanks were losing billions of dollars and required the public to bail them out, their top brass expected to be paid their “titanic” bonuses. With that kind of leadership, why should unions behave any different?

In Europe, unions have much better relationships with management, in part because much of management was once part of unions and in part because executive remuneration is much more reasonable

^I might not know much but I don’t think it’s just the management is corrupted but the unions are too. Some managements are really ridiculous (like wasn’t AIG or some financial institution that got gov’t funding give hundreds of millions of bonuses to the exec board while thousands of people lost their jobs? how messed up is that?)

Seriously, the entire system needs to be overhauled, and that must come with our generation if this generation doesn’t fix it.

Just wondering Alexandre, did you go to Michigan?

Yes, I did my undergrad at Michigan. The best four years of my life!
