As mentioned in my other threads- Im a CA resident with 4.10 W (4.17 10-11), 3.7 UW, 4.08 UC GPA, 1460 SAT, 31 ACT (took septmeber will wait for results), 750 math2 and 720 chem, EC’s include, hospital volunteering, tutoring, and Event Coordinator in Science Olympiad where i have few invitational medals).
I am also aspiring to be a doctor (but i might major in chemE or MSE bc of uncertainty, and will major in biochem/chem/bio in some schools)
So do u guys know any good premed schools (preferably privates in CA)?
I already know I will apply to UC’s and such but im also interested in privates. I am okay with privates in any state actually (i want to travel the US) but hopefully they offer scholarhsip or are cheap. My max budget is like 40-50k.
So what r some good premed schools
There really is no such thing as premed schools. Premed prereqs are just regular classes, some of which you’d be taking as a ChemE major.
Being premed in Calif is a tough gig since there are soooo many, toooo many premeds in the state, so the weeding can be very agressive.
Your budget goal makes it tougher for privates. Maybe San Diego Univ, San Francisco Univ, and St. Mary’s of California would give you enough merit to get costs down. URedlands might, too. They’d alll be fine for premed, but they don’t all have chemE …maybe none do, I haven’t checked.
Santa Clara would be fine, too, but I don’t think you’d get costs down to your goal. Maybe LMU …but again, not sure if they have ChemE.
I think SLO has ChemE, but it’s not private.
You’d be better off trying to get a tie to another state as a premed from Calif.
Just about any college in the country will offer the necessary pre-requisites for medical school. The pre-reqs are (except for biochem) are all lower level, largely introductory level classes that you can find anywhere.
Fot pre-med, you should look for a college that offers you the best combination of fit, opportunity and cost,
Fit, because happier students earn better grades. (And there empirical evidence to back this up.)
Opportunity includes access to medical volunteering sites, to clinical or laboratory research as undergrad, and to a variety of majors since 75% of freshmen pre-meds end up never applying to medical school.
Cost, because medical school is hideously expensive and there is little financial aid available except for loans, loans and ore loans. Pre meds are strongly advised to minimize their undergrad debt.
ye i am looking at in state publics for cheap cost, but since i am CA native- all the schools are super competitve so i was wonderwing if i can find cheap solid privates
The only cheap (from merit) solid private in Calif that I can think that would be strong enough as a premed would be St. Mary’s of Calif. however, I don’t think it has eng’g.
That’s going to be one of your big hurdles for a private in Calif…cost AND a school that has chemical eng’g or eng’g at all.
it doesnt have to have chemE, that was mainly for publics
also it can be slighlty expensive but it shud have good scholarhsips
and im not just limited to CA- OOS are prefectly fine for me
