Good Public High Schools in NoVA

Any comments on George Mason High School in Falls Church City?

How is the neighborhood, mostly high rise apts, homes?

afroninja26 - I actually lived in the townhouses across the street from Falls Church lol. The area really isn’t as bad as people think. If you don’t go around causing trouble, you’ll be fine :D

I’ve been around George Mason High School several times and obviously it’s in a nice area 'cause Falls Church City is known for being wealthy. I don’t think there are any apartments around it, mostly single houses (nice ones too).

Not sure that the smaller school is the better. What you want is a good student teacher ratio. Also, the larger the student population the more opportunity and selection of Honors, AP, IB classes which is what you want for the college-bound kids.

George Mason is probably the best option after TJ. I don’t pay too much attention to rankings, but it’s ranked 2nd in VA and 17th or so in the US. It’s a beautiful and affluent neighborhood with low crime rate and a great atmosphere. It’s the only high school in FC City, and the city itself is the kind with a lot of fine dining and such. It’s also really close to Tyson’s Corner Center, the premier shopping center in NOVA.

Overbyen - I live in the other townhouses near FCHS and I’ve lived there for 8 years. I’ve seen some pretty gruesome things. It used to be a criminal hub; in the first year I lived there, there were at least 5 people who got murdered or raped, and there was a police station placed in the neighborhood. In the past 3 or so years, there have been really only petty crimes. Believe it or not, the high school is pretty safe despite this.

FCHS is a great option because it’s a small school and it’s easy to talk to/ get to know teachers, get leadership positions, start clubs, and your teachers really know you well. In all honesty, any high school in Ffx Cty is great, but I back Falls Church all the way. And I know about all the other high schools too, believe me

Some stuff I missed - we have pretty much all the ap classes other than physics c, euro and art history. We should be getting those within the next 2 years, and this upcoming year we are getting ap comp gov and ap comp Sci.

Some APs we have
Math: Calc ab and BC, stat, comp Sci
Hist: world, us, us gov, comp gov
Eng: Lang and lit
Sci: bio, chem, Env Sci, physics b
Social sci: psych, econ, human geo
Languages: span lit, span lang, French, Japanese, latin
All the art APs and ap music theory

Falls church city has really an assortment of house types. Downtown FC has nice modern apartments and townhouses in just one section, and then the rest are regular houses.

Class sizes are big for freshman and sophomore classes in every Ffx Cty HS, around 20-30 per class in my experiences. They start to thin out in JR and SR years because you can take many more classes such as more APs.

According to what one of my teachers tells me, each teacher teaches 100-120 students max. 20-30 per class is nice for me at least because you are not afraid to be singled out or embarrassed/scared, but also not so big that your teacher doesn’t know your name. Teachers for me are always open to offer 1on1 help during this time period we call Jag time, where students can basically do whatever they want (which of course includes visiting teachers/ going to the library)

The one thing that is crucial to know when moving to northern virginia is that we are the most modernized suburban area in the USA. We are home to tons and tons of companies/govt organizations because of our proximity to dc.
