Good second major/minor for art major

(I posted a similar question in the art majors forum as well.)

I am currently attending college, going for a BA in arts (concentration undecided, but will probably be graphic design) & a minor in Mass communications.
I have the available credits for another major or minor & still finish in four years. I don't know what some good options would be. I was hoping for something that would compliment the art or communications side to expand career possibilities or just give me more options in the future. Maybe writing?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, I am not very interested in biology or math.

Thanks!

Business? Technical writing? Computer science?

I was thinking of technical writing.

Not sure how you could tie art and technical writing together.

I’d say business in some form - specifically advertising.

Technical writing is at least a practical skill though. It’d give the OP a nice skill if art doesn’t go well.

I would agree with pandem, having a concentration in graphic design and business-advertising (plus communications) would be a great combination.

Combining graphic design with some sort of writing would be quite useful. Depending on your school, you might not have to declare a separate major to learn how to write well and in a variety of styles. English composition, technical writing, journalism, even creative writing–all of these would be great complements to your art coursework.

Thanks for the feedback.
I know it is kind of hard to say what would be complementary since I did not post a very specific career goal and what not.

If you pick something writing oriented you’re competing with every other college degree holder.

Pick something that will give you somewhat unique, concrete skills, like computer science or accounting.

I can see computer science potentially being an asset, possibly, depending on the courses offered–applications in digital design, web design, etc. But accounting? That sounds like a (/cough boring) backup for an arts major rather than a complement.

But this is from an English major, so, grain of salt, anyone?

Where does an art major get a job though? If I were the OP I’d be looking for skills that would land me a job no matter what the first major is.

Well, it is a graphic design concentration, so hopefully I would get a job at a design company which would most likely work commercially with other companies. That would be the most common outcome I can think of.

I would look for a business option that works with your existing credits - marketing and advertising come to mind. Everything has a business aspect, including art. Galleries that don’t make a profit close, artists that can’t find a market for their work end up doing something else - business skills are never a waste of time.

The suggestion of accounting should be ignored, as it has absolutely nothing to do with art.

What comes to mind is either computer science or marketing. Computer science because that would allow you to fully code as well as design web sites, java apps, etc.

Marketing because design firms do a lot of work in advertising for companies and events.
