Hi guys!
I want to do Forensic Psychology and I want a big state school. Are there any schools that offer it/would be good for it?
Or do I just have to double major in criminology and psychology? What schools would be best for that?
Thanks!
Forensic psychology is too specific for undergrad at most colleges; only a handful of colleges offer this major. That’s because in order to be a forensic psychologist, you typically have to get a BA in psychology, then a PhD in clinical psychology, and then significant work experience working with criminals and/or with a law enforcement agency.
One good public college that offers this major is the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the CUNY system, a four-year public college focused primarily on majors/careers in criminal justice and law enforcement. The upside is that even out of state tuition at CUNY colleges is pretty low; the downside is that living in New York is very expensive. Florida Institute of Technology is another public university that offers this major. The private University of New Haven allows you to develop a concentration in forensic psychology within its psychology major.
But yes, a good alternative is double-majoring in criminal justice or criminology or forensic science and psychology. Or you can major in psychology and minor in one of the other three (but not the other way around). There are many large public schools that have criminal justice majors and minors and several that have forensic science majors or minors, and almost all of them have a psychology major.
