Good summer schools?

Hey guys,

I'm a 16 year old girl and I live in the netherlands. I want to study at an (selective) uni in america. :)
I have been to an information center in my city and they told summer schools could help.

I am inbetween my sophomore and junior year (yeah it's strange) so yale and tisch won't accept me, because I need to be a junior to apply.

RADA (royal acadamy of dramatic arts) really has my interest and it's reputation is good, I mean its the julliard of the UK. I don't mind going to England.

Is anyone familiar with RADA, how selective is it? What are my chances as an international student?

cheers!

Anyone?

If you have something to say about Tisch, please do so!

I’m a bit confused - are you a “rising” junior - that is, are you currently attending the equivalent of a U.S. high school junior year? If so, you would be a rising senior next summer, and eligible for most sumer programs. If you can tell us where you are in your secondary education and when you want to attend a summer program we may be able to help.

Best regards.

A rigorous program and wonderful learning opportunity.

My child did this two years ago on the Musical Theatre Track. What a difference it made it her.

Carnegie Mellon Precollege and and Northwestern/Cherubs Summer Institute are both worth a look. I don’t know if these are comparable to RADA.

I have a question for readers of this thread. D4 is starting 11th grade, so next year will be her last opportunity for a precollege program. In fall 2011 she will be applying to BFA and BA programs in acting (not MT). For the past two summers she attended Stagedoor Manor, each time for one session. Both time she was in the drama that’s performed on the lawn on Thursday nights and again on Saturday morning (I think it’s called C show). She had a major supporting role the first year and a lead role this year and was in Players Ensemble. She loved her experience there and felt she learned and grew a lot, but SDM is very expensive and not a college prep program.

Some have advised us that she has already done as much as she could expect to, in terms of the roles she was cast for, at SDM and that she should attend a precollege prep program, such as those mentioned in this thread. Our problem is that the registration deadline for SDM is looming, with a nonrefundable $1000 deposit. But the applications for the other programs are due in spring. If we allow the SDM deadline to pass, she will lose her place (they have a long wait-list) and there is no guarantee she will be accepted elsewhere. We can’t afford to send her to two programs, even if the dates line up.

Any thoughts? I’m not a theater person, so this is new territory for me. Thanks!

I’m sure that others here know much more about this than I do, but it seems inconceivable that your daughter would not be accepted at a desirable precollege program.

My D attended Carnegie-Mellon’s program, and it was invaluable in preparing for auditions. At the end of the summer, the students are required to “audition” in front of a panel, using the monologues they have worked that summer.

CMU is designed to give the students an idea of what a conservatory education is like; for some, they decide that this is not what they want to be doing in college, and that is helpful, too.

When not in class or signed in for curfew, the students were allowed to go where they wanted, and my D enjoyed navigating her way around Pittsburgh. It is a lot of freedom, and so I have to say that I am glad my D was a rising senior when she went, and not a junior…

Thank you for the vote of confidence, NJTheaterMom. SDonCC, do you have a sense of how competitive admission is to the Carnegie program? It looks as if they are selected on the basis of an essay, resume, and test scores. But my daughter may not take the ACT until Feb or April, and is a little worried about how her scores will turn out. She does not have a lot of experience with standardized tests. She is doing some test prep now, but my sense is that the test may be the weak link for these and college applications. Her grades and resume are good and she writes well…

My sense is that they really just want to be sure the kids are diligent, and have thought this through. I can’t say for sure, though, because my D’s PSATs happened to be quite strong.

A-- are you sure that deposit is non-refundable? I seem to remember it being refundable until Jan. 15 or something… (with the long waiting list they’re sure to fill the spot.) B. My daughter did the BU summer program (known as BUSTI) last summer and felt thoroughly challenged and inspired. They audition for the BFA at the end of the program. And it seemed as if most of the people who applied got in-- as SD said, they’re looking for diligence and responsibility, and kids who will write a serious essay and get good recommendations tend to be diligent. There was so much class time and rehearsal time, and homework-- they didn’t have much chance to get in trouble–and they all seemed like lovely kids. D was a rising junior and she had an absolutely wonderful summer.

Although I can’t quite remember where I read it, others on CC have written that it is not difficult to get into CMU’s precollege program. My D attended CMU as well. She had good but not outstanding academics but told me later that, as far as she could tell, her grades were better than most.

I will second what Gwen said…my son did the BU summer program (BUSTI) this last summer as well, and loved it. loved the people, and learned so much. Wonderful program!

Last summer there were several International students in attendance as well.

glass - I’d suggest she apply for CMU, BU and Northwestern’s cherub program. I’m sure there are others that will also come up, but between those three, there’s an excellent chance she will be accepted into at least one, and all are excellent. NU’s program is outstanding, as are the others. They take only rising seniors, and the kids end up at excellent colleges. In the lists I’ve seen, around 15% matriculate at NU, about 10% at NYU, and so on, with all going to great theatre schools.
