Good topic for common app discussion?

Hello everybody, this year the Common Application essays came out a bit early this year: http://blog.commonapp.org/2015/03/31/2015-2016-essay-prompts/.

I want to do essay number 5, the one about transitioning from childhood to adulthood. I’m planning on talking about how in my freshmen year I started to make my own garden…with vegetables, fruits, and other stuff inside it that required lots of planning such as where to put the plants so they get the best sunlight, etc, and how it required a lot of dedication…do you guys think that’s too bland of a topic to talk about? In other words do you think the admissions office people will remember my essay? I don’t know if it’s good enough. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I honestly don’t know what to talk about, I’m so lost in writing my essay lol.

I don’t really know how many teenagers garden or write about it – but I wouldn’t think it’s very common, so it sounds like something that would be remembered. The prompt asks about transitioning to adulthood. Is gardening something your family does and having one yourself is a sign of being an adult in your family? Or is there some other way you can be sure to address that part of the prompt? I suppose you could use the first prompt instead (it’s pretty wide open).

You are starting early (good for you!) so give it a try and see what others think of it. You may want to bounce ideas around with people who know you well before you start writing. My husband and I bounced ideas around with my son before he sat down to write.

Thanks a lot for the advice
