Just join the thread but I’ve been looking through the thread. I’ve had no contact from google at all check my spam and still nothing. Losing hope but trying to stay optimistic. I applied for the Atlanta camp and scholarship
CONGRATS TO EVERYONE WHOS BEEN ACCEPTED SO FAR !!
CCthunderfin - re: “mid-May” - 2 or 3 ppl on the CSSI slack chat who emailed Google early last week received emails back saying Google plans to notify applicants by “mid-May.” I was one of them. After that, someone who had made a wait list somewhere (Austin, I think) received an email saying they would be notified by May 7. Also, different locations appear to be notifying on different dates.
Guys I got ACCEPTED and I dont even have stellar stats (24 act, 4.1/5 GPA). If you write with passion you may get in!! #Cambridge
@jd1209 First of all CONGRATS!! Did you get notified today?
Can everyone who got accepted state their race and gender pls? It seems that Google doesn’t look at stats at all, but race and gender is the determining factor.
@bogeyorpar did you really just say that race and gender is the determining factor
@bogeyorpar First off, there are clearly more to an applicant than their “stats”, Google pays attention to the creativity and passion conveyed through the essays. Secondly, even still, I have better “stats” than your son and I got in nonetheless. Don’t use race as the explanation of you or your son’s failures, I’m sad I have to be the one to tell you.
Google does aim to accept more URMs (so girls & people who aren’t white or Asian) with little to no experience for this program, so I can see where that comment would come from. However, that still means they have to have passion & good essays
Black male and I’ve gotten no correspondence from Google.
Looking over this thread, I really wish I applied. I just thought I was gonna get a rejection. I’m a URM from Virginia with average stats and I know a friend through SAMS who got in at Pittsburgh. I definitely would’ve wrote some killer essays. All well. I’m still very excited for all of you who got in! I’ve been to the Google Pittsburgh office and its definitely a fun place. Might try and visit Pittsburgh again this summer.
@jeffrandell , don’t get emotional. Let the facts speak. I just haven’t seen any acceptance here who are not URM or women. If you have facts to dispute that, then show it. You may have great stats, but are you a URM? See, URM is the pre-requisite; if you happen to have great stats, even better. But stats and passion without URM status won’t be sufficient.
I got notified not last Thursday, but the Thursday before THAT.
I was accepted. I’m asian and female, and I have had experience through Girls Who Code summer immersion program @bogeyorpar
Congrats @kelvin82 ! And thanks for stating your race and gender. It’s too late for this year’s candidate, but can be valuable information for next year’s applicants.
The whole point of CSSI is to get people from underrepresented groups to get the support they need in comp sci. However, that does not mean that race/gender is a god-card to get in. I am a latina and I still have not heard back, so yeah there is definitely other factors than just being a minority. The people who get in got in based on the opportunities they got and what they did with those opportunities, that is what Google highlights in every application. By saying race/gender as the sole determining factors is not just nearsighted and wrong, but is also very belittling to the people who deserved their acceptance.
Today’s theory: Maybe Google is taking an extra 2 weeks this year because they’re trying to figure out who is truly from a URM, faces real struggles and is smart/talented/passionate about CS vs. those who claim URM but have only distant and (more likely) partial URM heritage & are affluent, surrounded by a huge support network.
Several kids at our high school with very distant and partial Latino heritage have taken scholarships and places at CSSI (2 yrs ago), and Princeton, Stanford, Yale, and Duke from smart, hard-working kids in Chicago less than 2 miles east of our town - kids who deserve and need a leg up. Question is, how do you really know who is in need these days? Totally support Google’s mission, but some people are gaming the system. I’ve seen it happen.
and by people gaming the system, I mean white males (like myself) and their families.
Anyone hear back from them?
@mgineer This thread isn’t for theories for Google’s decision making. If they felt there was some lack of integrity they would contact applicants to follow-up and verify.
You sound like a bitter child complaining because you can’t get scholarships. There are literally tons of scholarships out there that don’t ask for your race so apply for those instead of complaining about one that you applied for that was URMs only anyway.
In terms of college admissions, they look at way more than just your ethnicity (if you stated it) including the rigor of your coursework, family financial situation, and where you live.
I’m a black male with a 4.0 weighted GPA and a 630 on SAT math, but I’ve still gotten nothing from Google. A lot of us are frustrated but in the end it’s all up to Google since it’s their program.
