Western joins a number of other university campuses, including San Diego State University, Penn State, Cornell University, Dartmouth and others in the Google program.

The “Street View Trike,” which weighs more than 200 pounds, is outfitted with a special multi-lens camera apparatus that collects the images for the 360-degree street-level views. Once the images are stitched together into panoramics and published on Google Maps, users will be able to visually explore and navigate the campus by zooming into the lowest map level or dragging the orange "Pegman" icon on the left-hand side of the map onto a path outlined in blue. To protect individual privacy, the faces of pedestrians on campus will automatically be blurred.

Neat! I went and “walked” around SDSU a bit, and then went and trotted out onto the football field at Penn State!

That sounds like a great idea! My son, along with our foreign exchange student and several friends were skateboarding down a nearby street last week, when the filming “Google” truck passed. When the truck stopped, they were able to find out that they would be appearing in the new images, which will be up in 6 months. How cool is that, especially for our foreign exchange student, who will be back in his home country?!!

That’s really cool - and useful. Thanks for posting this EK4.

Toledo - That’s cool too - especially for the exchange student. I passed a Google street view car with the camera rig strapped to the top once. I don’t know if it was actually capturing at that time or just driving somewhere. Maybe I should go back to that street on Google and look for myself.
