Google hearts the U of C

I was poking around on teh interwebs the other day when I noticed something really cool...

The entire city of Chicago can be viewed using google street view!

And because the U of C is in the city of Chicago, you, internet user you, will be able to check out the campus, dorms, neigborhood, etc. as if you were traveling around campus by car.

If you type in "University of Chicago" into google maps and click on "street view," you will be brought to the administration building, the ugliest place on campus. Anyhow, I highly recommend you click on the center of the quads (what google street view calls the "roundabout") and start poking around.

Suggestions:

1) Take a look at the quads
2) Go north by clicking/pivoting (it takes some getting used to) to 57th street. Behold the mighty Regenstein Library.
3) Go east on 57th street, until you hit a large mass of water.
4) Click on Ellis Ave (Ellis is a North-South street that is the west edge of the quads). Go north on Ellis to 55th street, where you'll see Ratner Gym, and south, so that you cross the Midway, to Burton Judson). Check out the new dorm under construction.
5) Go east on 59th street from Ellis for major purtyness. You'll see Harper Library and hopefully get a sense of why I love this school.
6) Woodlawn Ave. between 59th and ? is home to a lot of grand houses and frats, as is University Ave. The Graduate School of Business/Robie House are on 58th and Woodlawn.
7) The Max Palevsky Dorms line 56th, between Ellis and University (on the south side of 56th). Check those out.
8) "Walk" to the Shoreland by going east on 55th street... check out the string of Thai restaurants under the train tracks... and keep on going until you hit South Shore Drive.
9) Check out the "student ghetto".... unofficially 55th st- 53rd, between Ellis and Kimbark.
10) Go east on 53rd for more eclectic stuff.
11) Go west of Cottage Grove, north of 47th, and south of 64th to see the " neigborhoods that everybody seems to worry about.

Add any suggestions/observations!

Thanks! Can't wait to try this out (I need to finish a giant English paper first).

Or I could procrastinate some more...hm...intriguing, indeed.

I used this feature to figure out how to get to our hotel in NYC a few months ago...it was so helpful knowing what landmarks to look for and what was nearby.

wow how did they do that? Drive around with a 360 degree camera?

somedumbnoob -- Yes. See Google Street View Van Spotted in Hayward

this is a lot of fun to play with. I probably won't get a chance to visit the university, so this is probably the closest i'll get. the buildings are so cool.
