Got a C- in Gen Chem II

I screwed up on the final and ended up with a C- in Gen Chem II. I know that this will hurt me, so I am not asking how much it will hurt me, but rather, what can I do to make the situation better?

Without factoring the C-, my GPA was around a 3.75. Should I retake the class? I spoke to my advisor and she told me that I would be able to retake. What do y'all suggest?

Thanks guys

I vote for the retake. A single C is fine - a single misstep isn't going to damage your application in the context of a strong record, but if you have the option of retaking, I don't see why not.

It's important to find out, however, whether this retake erases the first class entirely from your transcript. I recommend the retake if and only if that's the case.

I know that at least some schools will permit a retake, and only the retaken class will factor into your school's GPA, but the previous class still appears on the transcript. In that case, the previous class will still be factored into your AMCAS GPA, and I would not recommend a retake.

"I know that at least some schools will permit a retake, and only the retaken class will factor into your school's GPA, but the previous class still appears on the transcript."

Yes, this is the case at my school. Why don't you recommend a retake? My science GPA took a hit from this, so I thought retaking would bring it up.

Thanks

In this case, the C- will always show up - there is nothing you can do to erase it from your AMCAS GPA. It erases the grade from your school's GPA, but will not erase it from your AMCAS GPA. In this case, then, a "retake" would only serve the purpose of outweighing it, which any other BCPM course would do exactly the same way. Retaking, however, might be seen as a cop-out, since you really are just repeating the same material and it should be easier this time around.

If you want to bring up the GPA, take an easier bio class or something. That would accomplish exactly the same purpose as a retake - since your school does not erase retaken classes from your transcript - while not seeming to be exploiting a loophole.

Okay makes sense. Which bio courses are considered easy?

thanks

Depends on your school. And I don't necessarily mean bio. If it happens that Physics III happens to be easy, go for that. Or if p-chem, by some wild stretch of the imagination, happens to be graded generously at your school, go for that.

Thanks dude. So you really don't think I am screwed? My overall GPA was around a 3.7 without factoring the C-

Oh, no, not at all - not with a single C. Experience shows that time and time again.
