Got a D in my class, ruined my gpa and lost all scholarships freshman year. Ready to give up

Hi, i just got finished my freshman year with a 2.6 gpa. I did well in my other classes (got A’s but those were super easy gen ed classes). But i just found out in my IT class i’ve got a D by barely failing one midterm. Ive now lost all 4 of my scholarships which paid almost half of my tuition. I don’t know of i could get them back next year and its making me consider leaving college because i know i cannot afford any of the tuition not to mention i’ve already took out a big loan prior to losing my scholarships, now its summer and i have no clue what im going to do next year.

Ask if your scholarships are gone or if you are on probation. Often there is a semester of probation to bring up the gpa. Now bringing up the gpa is HARD to do in one semester. Go talk to someone in advising and in FA. If you retake the class you got a D in, will the grade be replaced? If so, do that and take other classes you’ll do well in.

If you got As in all your classes but one D, I’m not sure how you ended a whole year with a 2.6? If you took 4 classes per semester that’s around a 3.6 GPA, no?

The last semester. I had a 2.5 gpa the first semester.

Virtual hugs to you! I am sorry you are going through this. Happened to me many years ago. To my son not as many years ago. To many, many students.

First, find out if the scholarships are truly lost, or if you do have another term to try to redeem your gpa. If they are gone, it’s important that you face the situation and take adult action about this.

You say you already took out a loan. A big loan. How are you affording it? How big of a loan? You should not be taking out big loans for college. You will pay for a long long time after college for that loan when you are more than ready to move on to other things.

If you cannot afford this college, it’s time you face that fact, and look for less expensive options. A leave of action might be in order.

I’m sorry you are having to handle these things st a young age, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. Not a life threatening thing, but very painful. Time to face the music heress to whether this college is affordable on its terms.

I took nearly 5,000 a semester out of my loan. I was thinking about saving money by getting a job.

Can you move home and commute? Get a PT job and PT study over 3 semesters. What is your major? What school are you at? What is the financial picture?

The problem wasn’t just the D in the one class. In fact, even with the D, your GPA went up from semester 1 to 2. But you should talk to your advisor about whether you will lose your scholarships right away.

I cant commute my first 2 years at my college.
Im a computer science major

Don’t give up but do evaluate what went wrong. If you are doing poorly in your major classes, figure out why? Is it not a good fit or did you not apply yourself? If you have student loans, you want to stay in school to keep them from coming due. (I don’t know the details on the loan rules.)

You can look into retaking that class and maybe another over summer while you work. That would give you some space in your schedule for next year, improve your GPA and get your some money so you don’t need as large a loan.

Investigate if your retake this class during the summer at a community college if the class will transfer and if your new grade will replace the D.

Investigate your school’s policy on retaking a class and what happens to the original grade. My son is retaking a class this summer for a required course that he did poorly in. Assuming he gets a higher grade in the summer, it will wipe out the poor grade. The bad part is of course having to pay tuition for a course he has already taken, but he too needs a higher GPA for his scholarship. If it’s not too late to look into taking it this summer, it’s worth considering, especially if you think it will go much better the second time.

I’m assuming you need a 3.0 to keep the scholarships? If you have a 2.6 cumulative average and a 2.5 from the previous semester that means you got a 2.7 this semester - that’s a B- average, and you didn’t get that will an A in all your other classes this semester. You should have seen this coming. As others have suggested, if improving the grade of this class would bring your GPA up enough, take it over. Also see if the scholarship is completely gone, or just on probation with the possibility of getting it back. But if it’s possible to get it back you need to consider whether you will be able to pull the GPA up - there is no sense in throwing more money at this school if you can’t. You should also consider if this is the right major for you. Did you have any CS experience prior to college? If you almost failed an introductory level CS class, will you be able to build the foundation you need for more advanced classes in your major?
