Got a deferral from MSU.... What are my chances now?

So, to my dissatisfaction my nightmare became a reality… I received a deferral from MSU. It reads that they want my 7th semester transcript before they make their final decision. So, this of course has thrown me into a panic state, so naturally I will now try to calculate the damage done.

HERE ARE MY STATS:
•Current Overall G.P.A: 3.4
•SAT: 1120 (New style out of 1600)
•ACT: (taking in December 2016)
•Total A.P. Classes: 5 (A.P. Chem, A.P. Micro Economics, A.P. Macro Economics, A.P. Government, and A.P. Psychology)
•Total Honors Classes: 6 (Adv. Algebra 1, Adv. Biology, Adv. Geometry, Adv. Algebra 2, Adv. Chemistry, Adv. Physics)
•Foreign Language: Spanish (5 years)
•Sports: Varsity Cross Country (4 years), Varsity Track and Field (3 years), and Varsity Golf (1 year).
•Extra Info: I created my own business in which I am very successful. I employed multiple people and helped them be successful under my guidance.

•My 7th semester grades are very A.P. Class weighted. I’m taking 3 A.P. Classes this senior year all of which I’m getting a B or higher in.

***Please let me know what your thoughts are on my chances of getting accepted at this point. If you have any similar situations, please share with me. I’d love to know how to best go about this to make my chances the greatest.

What was your status before the deferral? Can you post your deferral status here??

My status before the deferral I do not have available to provide an exact quote. However, all it basically said was that they have received my application and are pending review of it.

My application status as of now as the following:

"Application Status:
We require additional information before making a final decision regarding your application to Michigan State University. Please request for your counselor to forward your seventh semester grades directly to the Office of Admissions.

Additionally, you are required to complete the MSU Student Background and Experiences Inventory in order to have your application for admission reviewed again.

Please note this decision applies only to the term listed in your personal information (above). If you have recently submitted a new application or have submitted multiple applications to MSU, it may take up to 3 - 5 business days for new information to reflect in the online status check system."

You need to prepare for the ACT. Your current SAT corresponds to a ACT of 22, which would put you in the bottom quartile of applicants. Standardized test scores are described as “Very Important” by MSU.

Did your status before the deferral say anything about not needing additional documents/information? Hope everything goes will with your admittance.

@msugirl2021 yes, I believe it did say that.

Focus on getting your SAT/ACT scores up. That would be your best bet since it’s hard to move your GPA at this point. I would also be applying to your safety schools. If MSU is your dream school, you might need to think about doing one year somewhere else and then transferring in. You still should have a shot but I would start studying for the ACT and perhaps take the SAT again to see if you get get that score up.

@CheddarcheeseMN @dcolosi Thank you both for your responses. As I plan to take the ACT in December this year, will my test score be available in time to send it to them before fall decision deadline? How long does it normally take to receive the scores?

?? I guess you forgot to mention because you actually didn’t say that. So you’re saying that your previous status said

Application Status
Thank you for your patience and continued interest in Michigan State University. An initial review of your application indicates you are a competitive applicant to MSU. Due to an increase in the quantity and quality of freshman applications, the Office of Admissions requires additional time to thoroughly review all applicants before making a final decision.

Admissions decisions will be released on a rolling basis, beginning in mid-October 2016. Our intention is to deliver your decision within 12-weeks from the time your application was complete; including all your supporting documents (personal statement, transcript and test-scores).

No additional information or documents are required. The most up-to-date information will be posted to your account as soon as it becomes available. Students will be notified by email when a change occurs on your account.

Thank you again for your patience.

@msugirl2021 Hi! My application status was changed to this exact status a few days ago. Does it mean I’m deferred or anything? I have a 3.63 with a 25 on my ACT and all app material was received on October 5th.

@kaayemly1 if you are referring to the letter just above your post, then no, it is not a deferral. More of an “in-progress”.
