Here are the things that I think made me stand out:

My work experience was intense. Over the summer I went to India and worked for a multinational telecommunications company as programs / operations manager. I also worked at a company in the bay area as a computer tech / IT tech and as a sales representative. I worked between 25-40 hours a week for most of college.

I finished IGETC/ all of my prereqs by the Fall 2007 quarter. However rather than stopping or taking easy electives for units, I thought I could stand out more by taking a FULL honors course load over my winter and spring quarters. I think this was definitely a huge factor--maintaining a challenging course load even though I didn't necessarily have to.

My essays and application: I spent a LOT of time working on the actual application; I explained every single thing as clearly and as thoroughly as I could. And while I started materializing my final essay the day before apps were due, I had spent at least a month INTENSELY thinking about what I would write about. I probably wrote down 20-30 different topics before I came to my final one. I think that my longer essay for Q2 was stronger than Q1 but my response to Q1 itself wasn't bad at all. I talked about very traditional values--some of which can even be seen as conservative values--and how I am the product of tradition in the family.

poppin,
thx! your reply really goes into details!
But i just find out I am really a dull guy. It seems my life looks like pure water. i begin to worry about my essay, for it seems i have nothing special points to shine...

While I would say Berkeley hits the nail on the head in a lot of its admissions, it can be hit or miss at times. It's unfortunate some real qualified students did not get in.

Really, students and instructor in my college all got shocked by Berkeley admission decision this year. one of my friend got in berkeley with a 3.7 GPA, she even got 2 B in her Econ and Caculus 1 classes, haven't finished her Cal 2 (very likely end up with a C in this spring). By the way, she got rejected my LA in the early April !!!!!!!!! Meanwhile a 3.9x got rejected in Poli Sci with bunch of ECs like club VP, Senior Tutor, TA .....

GPA: 3.85

Actually, I'm another "low GPA" kid that got in.

GPA: 3.47 at time of application / 3.68 at winter update
Cal Pre-Req GPA: 2.66 at time of application (outstanding F that wasn't replaced) / 3.33 at winter update
UCLA Pre-Req GPA (incl. accounting): 3.00 at time of application (outstanding F that wasn't replaced) / 3.6 at winter update
Pre-Reqs: Second calculus class and statistics planned; first calculus class in progress; all other courses completed
IGETC: Completed
Accepted: Cal Econ (Spring)
Rejected: UCLA BusEcon
Essays: The first one was written the day of the deadline. The second one was an old essay I wrote for another application that I modified to barely fit the prompt. (Seriously.)
ECs: Not a lot, by any means. No clubs, no awards, no steady job. I do the occasional gig every now and then. I have my own business, but I don't have anything to show for that right now.

I wrote about my business in the first essay. I acknowledged upfront that I had no professional experience in the field; I only knew of how I planned to apply the knowledge I would gain from my studies.

I don't even remember how I made the second essay work -- I lost my copy of that one. It basically dealt with the kindness of strangers.

UCLA was my first choice, actually. I would've been far less surprised if things were the other way around---admitted LA, rejected Cal---mainly due to my pre-req GPA. I'm puzzled as to how these schools came to their decisions, but I'm not complaining.

GPA: 3.85
Major: Economics for every school
Accepted: UCB, UCD, UCSB, UCSD, UCI
Rejected:UCLA
Pre-reqs: all completed prior to application. I also completed the calc-based statistics requirement for Cal last quarter, which almost no community colleges offer, so I wonder if this helped at all.
IGETC: complete
Essays: pretty good
EC's: not great

Hey congrats on your acceptance cccbound. It looks like there was something that they definitely liked about you. Just goes to show that acceptance isn't all based all on stats. Give yourself a pat on the back man; you earned it.
