Anyone else?
My Family had an EFC of around 3,000, I got a 16k scholarship and 1k from the Pell grant. Meaning it will cost me 55,000 to attend. They included that 55,000 from loans in my financial aid package. Of that 55,000 47,000 would come from a parent loan. I have a single parent who has to take care of my younger sister, and his mentally handicapped sister and her child.
So he can’t take out that loan. So should I just give up on NYU? Should I call the aid office on Monday? And if I call on Monday what should I say, and what should I expect to hear?
NYU isn’t going to give you $50k/year. That’s why they let you know your parent(s) can apply for ~$200k in loans over the next 4 years for you. Let them go.
Did you apply to any financial safeties?
This seems to happen a lot with NYU. It’s not worth it, so give it up. Any chance you applied to a LAC that promises to meet full need?
Yeah, I’ve gotten into some safeties and am waiting on UChicago - they claim to meet full need but I am not sure if I will get in. @austinmshauri @MinnesotaDadof3
What state are you from? Did you apply to any of your state colleges?
This is a sad but frequent story from NYU admits. So sorry.
Florida, I applied to UF and FSU, I will have bright futures (in state scholarship) for both of those schools which will cover the cost of tuition @austinmshauri
Personally, I am not excited about either of those schools but it looks like they will be my only options. @austinmshauri
Those are excellent schools, @RB55
Yeah, I’m just a bit upset rn. In all honesty, I’d be fine at either of those schools - but I am praying on Chicago, I find out Monday @jym626 .
You will be poor and cold at NYU. You will be warm and able to afford to eat in Florida, graduate without debt, and then can move to NYC and be cold and poor with a college degree.
Trust me, you do NOT want to go to NYU if you have to take >$200k in loans AND have no money to enjoy NYC. I don’t know how/why NYU became such a dreamy school. It’s really not anything special. It’s a large, impersonal school in a very expensive city. A lot of very rich kids go there, and you would not be able to keep up with them. it would be depressing.
University of Florida is a great option.
Did you do the tuition calculator before you applied? Not sure why this is an issue now. I would not have applied ED1 unless I was very confident we could afford it as a family (note that both my daughter’s GC and I had to sign off when she applied ED earlier this year since it was a binding application).
Was the calculator different from the actual financial read after you were accepted? Did your families financial situation change since you applied? I might be wrong but there may be issues withdrawing your commitment (would like other people’s thoughts on this). Unless you can show a financial discrepancy, you may have future ramifications.
Suggest doing a bit of research (quickly) before moving forward. You don’t want to create additional issues and make the situation worse.
Start with this…https://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/getting-early-decision-commitment/
This person and I had similar stats and EFCs so I believe that they should have gotten more. I think NYU gave the money based on desirability as many people have said.
This is exactly why none of my kids was permitted to apply to NYU. I have a friend who is still paying off her parent loans for her D who graduated from Tisch years ago and who never went on a single audition after graduation. Personally, having lived in the NYC area my entire life, I highly recommend Florida.
There will be no problem withdrawing an app due to financial concerns when full need is not met.
@RB55 I understand your pain but try to avoid student loan debt if at all possible. NYU will not significantly increase their award. Like many universities, NYU erroneously considers loans to be financial aid; they are, they are “self help”. And no university is worth $50K in loans a year.
This is one of NYU’s specialties. Don’t mortgage your future, it’s not worth it. (Really, NYU isn’t all that great except for a handful of majors).
If you want to live in NYC, there are other schools than NYU.
What do you want to major in?
What are your stats? Are you interested in universities in the Northeast even if not in NYC?
It’s not all NYU or if, you know.
There are quite a few colleges that have generous financial aid for lower income students and will take your situation (single parent, disabled sibling) into account, unlike NYU. Some may even end up cheaper than UF… Of course it will depend on your stats.
@nybdsm withdrawing an Early Decision application is not a problem if it is due to financial circumstances
@techmom99 “none of my kids were permitted to apply” is such a terrible philosophy. You should encourage your children to follow their dreams, especially when it regards their own adult life. If your family can’t afford their dreams, then make it clear to them that it will be their financial responsibility, rather than straight up preventing them from doing what might’ve been life changing.
