You will be using that laptop for 4+ years, saving precious data on it. Would you rather have a laptop on which the hardware was designed by a different company that made the software or would you rather have unity?
[/quote]
To fusionall: I totally agree, but it's not PC's fault that it came from 15 different places, jk lol. One of the best things about apple is that they make the hardware AND software. For Microsoft it's like trying to make an engine that fit's every car. But apple makes the car and the engine so the car works more smoothly together and to the maximum potential.

No worries, mate. I was only exaggerating with the losing data. If you take care of any system properly, Mac or PC, there shouldn't be any problems. However, I like to abuse units, or rather take them to their limit, all the time. I can't even count how many times I've fried my motherboard during middle school cause I had too many apps running. I haven't reached the "limit" on my Mac yet. It shouldv'e crashed by now, the way I treat it, but it's still going strong.

The same PC since 7th grade huh? That's amazing. lol.

As I am typing this, I'm on a PC right now playing World of Warcraft. You're right, they both have their strengths. I just prefer Mac as you prefer PC. :]

To Arian19: We sound as if we are on Apple's payroll. :P

...although that wouldn't be too bad at all.

The only reason i wanted to go to Berkeley was because the co-founder of apple (Steve Wozniak) went there, lol. An hopefully after i graduate, i am going to try and get a job at apple.

The only thing i am waiting for before i buy my Macbook Pro is for apple to get Blu-Ray for there Macbook's

I played WoW...I quit though after realizing how big of a time waste it is. Man....I wasted so much time playing that game...staying up instead of studying for a test the next day.
Anyways, anyone else besides me interested in cars? I drive a Lancer Evolution X

I plan on getting a Macbook pro. Should I be getting a macbook? Well... I do photo stuff so the bigger screen helps, the better graphics card helps, and I prefer the keyboard. I will feel very green friendly using my recycleable laptop as well, especially with the liberal freaks at UCSC.

With the student discount, macbook pros come down to what a good Sony or Dell would cost, and I don't mind putting up the extra money if this is my baby for four years.

Btw, I am a lifetime PC user and am pretty tired of my dell desktop. How can one machine crash so much?! :(

To Cali Trumpet: The biggest thing I have against the macbook pros is the dramatic increase in price. I mean, sure, it is a better machine but do I really want to spend $1000 more for a couple more inches of screen size and a ultrafast processor that will never be pushed? Also, the pros, because of their bigger size, tend to be less transport-friendly. The macbook's screen is just right in that I can carry the macbook around and still settle down to watch a movie on it comfortably.

May I ask what kind of photo manipulation you will be doing? If it's something for a business, go for the pro. The graphics card will help. However, the macbook's graphics card isn't half bad either. Just depends on how intense the applications you will run are.

I have nothing against people with macbook pro's, don't get me wrong. If you have the extra disposable income, go for it. I just don't understand why people buy $2000+ laptops only to check their email with it and chat on AIM. As if college wasn't expensive enough right? :]

Hehe. I'll further explain my case

Well the Macbook Pro has many useful features. For me, I am starting to do a lot of photo work in photoshop cs3. Frankly, the 13inch screen on the macbook is too small for me. Also, I really want a matte screen, and macbooks to my knowledge only come in glossy. Side by side, I am going to notice more screen real estate, but won't have any problems with an 'oversized notebook.' It is already considerably smaller and thinner compared to the competition.

The increase in price is only about $800 (I am getting the base MBP). For that you get quite a bit of perks. Lighted keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, aluminum casing, better graphics card (I like to play a few computer games), faster processor (It cannot hurt), bigger + better screen, better BTO (Built to Order) options -- gonna get a faster harddrive to speed things up a bit more.

I guess its not made for everyone and it may be overkill for me, but money is not really an issue and I think I will be able to take advantage of the extra features.

I think choosing to be different and picking a mac laptop over a pc laptop is a step in the right direction. Vista is a joke right now... I am a lifelong PC user and have never upgraded to it. I have become tired of my crashing computer and watching my computer become slower and slower everyday. With the beginning of colleges across the US offering Mac products in their stores, it is just a matter of time until the majority of college students own macbooks/macbook pros because ... they just work.

That's awesome! :]

Looks like all the reasons why to go for a pro vs. a standard macbook. Enjoy it when you get it. It sure is great to know the Mac community is steadily growing out there.

I just hope I don't get jacked at UCM. -__-''

To fusionall:
I talked to housing security, on Bobcat, and they said there hasn't been any theft. So, I doubt you'll get jacked.

no one steals here. and I really mean NO ONE. IDK, about you incoming freshmen...

Hey Premed..I am also thinking about going to a CC instead of Merced because I want to transfer but also experience some sort of college life.
Someone from my tutoring place told me that it is very very difficult to transfer to another 4 year from any UC, and those who transfer were on that program that is specially offered to some high school students. Is this true? How did you get into UCLA after 1 year? How many credits did you have?

I am a junior right now, after this semester I should have somewhere close to 74 semester credits under my belt. I would go to a ccc if I were you (MAN I WISH someone told me this before I got here, it really is not worth it to spend 20k+ a year here for an education you can get for $180 living...the college experience here isnt what you expect it to be. Trust me. Its the UC Meced experience (see my list of cons to see what that entails), which is a far cry away from what a college experience should ideally be.

if money isn't a big issue, do u still recommend going to cc rather than UC Merced?

Just looking out for my stuff man. lol. Honestly, the theft at my school is a bigger deal than the fights. Can't let anyone borrow anything because you'll most likely never see it back as they usually "lose" your graphing calculator or let their other friend "see it".

I'm glad no one steals there now but we don't know that with every incoming class...especially if more people live in the neighboring areas and go home on the weekends. Better be safe than stupid. <3

That's good to hear that there aren't any thefts at Merced, around here, people will steal anything that isn't bolted down.

Anyone know if double majors are allowed? If so, I'm assuming I would have to talk with my adviser about that?

Also, can transferability to another school, preferably another UC, be based on major? What are the odds of getting transferred if your intended major is already impacted at the transfer school?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Arian19: If money isnt a problem, hummm. I would say go to UC Merced then. You will still get somewhat of a college experience, as opposed to no college experience.

fusionall:

Your allowed to double major, I would set up an appointment with an advior sometime during your first semester here, to set a list of classes your first few years...it will be packed!

"getting transferred if your intended major is already impacted at the transfer school? "
Some majors are hard to transfer into (Biz-econ @ UCLA) and some are easy (Psychology @ UCI) it really depends.
