So i'm seriously considering living in CCI next year.....i really liked staying there for previewNU......anybody want to give a balanced view of pros and cons?

VERY nice facilities, good people, not as social as some of the other dorms.

Is it true that Ayers CCI has a reputation for being an "Asian" dorm? If so roughly how many residents are Asian?

ayers cci has the reputation of being the "college of chinese and indians", but it's not ALL asian. i think asians (including indians) might outnumber the caucasians there, but not by a HUGE margin. it's not usually a huge deal though. one of the things i like about cci is that it's got (at least with this year's freshmen) more of a mixed community of people. There are quite a few people who tend to hang out with people of their own race here, but there are some places, like cci, where it's a much healthier mix than other places.

The rooms are big and nice, you've got mini-kitchens on each floor... If you live on the first floor it's smaller than the other floors, but overall it's a pretty tight-knit and nice place. It's not a big drinking/huge party place, but they do stuff (unlike studying slivka)-- for example, we used to go on trips to belmont (another suburb) on the el to get all-you-can-eat sushi. (it's a great deal)

^ thanks for the info :). I am considering it as my first choice as of now, followed by Shepard.

If you put CCI first you will probably get it. I don't know if this is advice or a warning.

do you have to write an essay if your first choice is allison? do you have any idea how many people that put allison as their first choice actually live there freshman year?

Believe it or not, I think I am putting down Slivka as my first choice. I hear it's a really unpopular dorm because the people there anti-social or something. But I like the facilities and the proximity to Tech as well as the new gym.

Ayers doesn't sound bad either. Shepard was my second choice, but we'll see. Chances are if I put down Slivka as #1, I'll get that right?

oh yea, if anyone else has info about Slivka (bad or good) let me know because other than it being anti-social I haven't heard of anything negative (some say ppl can be pricks).

hmm I just checked out Ayers and it looks like Ayers and Slivka are practically neighbors. I think I'm going to go with Ayers as #2 now and bump Shep to #3.

Spetz, you have to write an "essay" (not really an essay) if you put a residential college ANYWHERE on your list- first or fifth. So even if you put Allison first, putting Willard 4th would cause you to write an essay.

SAS, if you value any sort of social life I would recommend against Slivka. Even CCI is better than that. Slivka is simply engineers and pre-meds who do work nonstop and keep their doors closed. I can't imagine having any fun there despite how nice LOOKING it is.

I was wondering... what's the etiquette for when you get sick? Is there a sort of infirmary where you can sleep so that you don't bother your roommate?

I've gotten sick twice this year and I just stayed in my room...

What is this "essay" like for the residential colleges? What do they ask?

It's just some short answers (250 words or less) about why a residential college would be good for you, why you want the ones you do.

slivka actually can be kindof hard to get into even as your first choice, especially because of the singles. (esp. since now foster walker and small houses are closed to freshmen).

How is the International-themed residential college? I haven't heard many comments (positive or negative) about that one and I'm curious.

I think i would actually enjoy living with a roommate rather than get a single. I've been at boarding school for the last 3 years and speaking from experience, if you get a good roommate, it can be an awesome experience!

Also, do any of the dorms have their own gym or are all the athletic facilities concentrated in the sports building?

No dorms have a gym INSIDE them but the South dorms are for the most part a quick walk to Blomquist, and the North dorms border SPAC and Patten so it's never a problem.

Alright, so the time has come for me to fill out housing forms. I am a moderate drinker who doesn't really love the whole flip-flops-with-jeans set. I also want to keep my grades high, so I don't want my dorm to be a complete gongshow. I look forward to enjoying the opportunities offered off-campus in Evanston and Chicago. I will be double-majoring in Computer Science and Int. Studies, so my classes will be pretty well-distributed throughout campus.

For a decent balance between all these factors, I think I'm going to go with Allison #1, but I really have no clue what to put after this. Willard? PARC? ISRC? If I put PARC or ISRC down as 4th or 5th, am I likely to get it? I didn't have occasion to visit any dorms besides Allison and ISRC when I was on campus, unfortunately.

Any help would be appreciated!

If Allison is your #1, Willard should be on your list. I wouldn't recommend PARC or ISRC, really. You should probably also include Elder and Bobb. And maybe Sargent 5th.
