Got Questions? Dorms, Life, Rooming, and More Answers To Be Found Here!

yeah I am looking for a double. But that's weird to know...I would have thought Slivka's bad rep would have shunned away applicants. Anywho, I have ayers as my backup. then I don't know what to do after that. I think I will mostly studying and venturing into Chicago/Evanston once in a while, coupled with a job or research.

ok.......so i'm looking for a dorm.....i'm really interesting in the res colleges.......and am really open to suggestions......so here are some things about me:

Chem/Flute Performance Double Major with Biochem minor.......yes i'm psycho (just joking)

I love collaboration and don't like cutthroat competition.
Besides my love of chem and music I really like to swim.
I have a wide mix of friends.
I'm not a huge party person. I like to be social and I'll probably go to a party or two but i'm not a big drinker or partier.
I want a friendly dorm.
I was considering CCI, Willard, Shephard, etc.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Willard, Shepard, Allison, maybe Chapin/Jones all sound good for you.

SASWombat: "I think I will mostly studying and venturing into Chicago/Evanston once in a while, coupled with a job or research"... sounds like a fun and exciting freshman year! Heh, barf.

I've been following all the housing boards, and the way everyone talks... is there some other link to the housing form besides the one on northwestern.edu/housing? That one still says "Watch this box for the housing application link!" Did something other than this option come out that I wasn't aware of?

i don't think it is out yet

Thanks a lot dfleish!

What about Shepard for me? A good fit? I've heard horrible things about Sargent.. don't know if there's any truth to them. How likely is it I'll get stuck there even if I put it 5th?

I don't know, my friends that live there seem to like it okay. I put Ayers 5th and I didn't get it (but I did a good job with my residential college app), so I am not sure how likely it is you'll get it. It's pretty random aside from residential colleges.

Is there a different essay for each res college you put, or only one essay?

pummer: I think it's just 1 essay. I remember receiving a call from a Northwestern rep who lives in Willard and I asked her about it. She said you only need to write 1 essay, which as dfleish said is fairly short and simple.

dfleish: haha you're totally right. I guarantee you things will change because I have about no experience with college life right now.

pummer, it's one application (no matter how many res colleges you choose), it was 1-3 short questions (I don't remember, it was probably 2). It takes about 10-15 minutes to do and it's nothing big, but res colleges WILL be picking people based on their essays so it's probably a good idea to take them somewhat seriously. Try to sound fun and exciting instead of making it a formal, boring essay. I wrote ridiculous ones and I got into Willard even though I had some really unpopular dorms on my list.

gradat, sargent is probably closer to what you're looking for if you want to keep the same lifestyle rather than shepard. shepard, for the most part, has less drinking (aka more tame). But shrugs you're probably going to be fine with any of those choices.

Do the beds at Northwestern require extra long sheets and bedding, or will normal fit ones suffice?

Extra-long sheets, but I have a regular comforter that works fine. So just worry about the sheets.

If I want to take mostly economics, philosophy, and religion courses, is CCI a bad choice? I also need my dorm to be near the squash courts. Thanks.

I have a question, are freshman required to live in dorms, or can you get an apartment? And would that save you any money in evanston/some local chicago suburb

Freshmen are required to live on campus.

Well, unless you're commuting from home. Either way I wouldn't recommend it- why would you want to? Dorms are part of the college experience! Do it for at least a year.

Yep, dorm life is FUN!

okay... so. i'm looking for a pretty social, but not overly loud dorm. i don't drink much or anything.... so i don't want a huge like annoyingly loud dorm, but not a socially inept dorm either. i do plan on studying (;P), yet i wouldn't mind the occasional party, etc.

i won't be able to stand tiny tiny rooms... and though my classes are more liberal artsy (so in the south i guess), i prefer to be in the north because i hear it's safer.

i'm puttin Elder as my top choice.. but what else do you recommend?

...safer? I don't really get that. I feel equally safe on all parts of campus. If you want social and big rooms, Allison and Willard should be on your list. Your last two should probably Bobb and maybe 1835 Hinman?? Or Shepard?
