damn....thats called being unlucky...

I know. At the risk of sounding like a wimp, I pretty much cried. Now I'm applying to Princeton, Dartmouth, Yale, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, MIT, Georgetown, NYU, GWU, WashU@Stlouis, UChicago, Case Western, Northwestern...All of which have great Economics or Business Programs, or even better...Economics+Poli Sci. majors...aka Public Policy, which is what I want. Hopefully I'll have better luck in RD.

jeeez
again YOU MAKE ME FEEL BAD
because i got in over you
i dont deserve it? lol
my combined SATs were a 2100 670V 730M 700W

ANYWAYS
i didnt go to nearly every continent, only one
i didnt even take business specific courses
i was not artistically talented
i got rejected from National Honor Society
my most commited community service was as a cheerleading trainer to a Pop Warner team, not nearly 100 hours
i was not a legacy
I AM DEF NOT VALEDICTORIAN
I AM ASIAN (not your typical one i might add)
I AM A CHEERLEADER hahahaha ya ya ya laugh but i got into WHARTON ED

honestly the reason why i think i got in was because of ME. thats its.
not my scores, my grades (even though i had a 4.74), my E.C.

ME= personality

that is why wharton looks above all at your essays, recs, school reports, and personality (from the interview)
they look at all those ABOVE your scores, your EC, your awards, your legacy
i mean it only makes sense right? in the business world no one cares how smart you are or how many ECs you do in your life, its about personality and those relationships with other people, its about how bad you want it, and how real you are

holyspirit, you said: "My essays might have been slightly impersonal because I didn't want to err on the side of coming off as flippant when I'm applying to the top business school in the nation..."

That was where you went wrong. My essays sounded as if they were written by a teenager. but they were pure honest. I DIDNT CARE WHAT THE ADMISSIONS OFFICER THOUGHT ABOUT ME. i think i came across as somewhat a ***** but thats me. i wrote truthfully. who cares if it was the #1 business school in the country... if they dont accept you as YOU TRULY ARE then they dont deserve to have you...

so BASICALLY my advice now to you...
for princeton or columbia... all the stats are there
like others said, choose what ECs were the most important to you
your essays will speak more than any EC or score will ever have to say...

So should my essays be humorouos or irreverent? i.e. tons of witty parenthetical statements all over the place? My common application essay is "What factors resulted in your current aspirations and goals?" and then I go and answer it. Since Columbia is open ended essay, I used that one too. Should I go with something more off beat? Such as "What the hell do you really like to do with your free-time?". And then be straight up honest and admit I love computer games and competing in tournaments? hahahaha.

I agree with Calisurf06's analysis. I believe that I got deferred because my essay does not sound like a 17-year-old teenager, too pretentious. I will call my regional rep. and ask his feedbacks.

How do you find out who your regional rep. is?

its just one person's opinion (mine)...
but really holyspirit you have EVERYHTING going for you
even with the little credit you give yourself
you are yourself and you cant change that and shouldnt
i dono if you should go all the way to talk about videogames
but ive seen CRAZY creative essays that have gotten people into AMAZING schools
its all how you use your essay to convey your personality
i can honestly see how you can write an essay merely on chicken dumplings
(I DONO?!?!) hahaha and get you into stanford

actually that is a true story bout a friend of a friend who got in writing about that...
gluck with everything!

Penn website. There is contact us section, you will find who is in charge of your state.

Do you think a good essay topic for say...the Common App would be to talk about traveling in general? or a specific trip?

Ooh. I have an idea. I used to be obsessed with the animal Echidna as a child. I even got a private showing at the Washington National Zoo as a kid. And it eventually led to me saving for years and years and going to Australia about 8 years later. Think that would be a good topic? I'm afraid to really be loose on my college essays because I have a habit of digressing into either a rant or inappropriate/non-politically correct discussion whenever possible.

I think maybe you should've taken Math IIC, and Wharton is a stickler for good math scores. I don't know if your essays are good or not, but you can PM me with them if you like and I can tell you my opinions. I think my essays got me in....

Aloha Spazallen, I am from Oahu too. Congrats for getting in. I got deferred.

I guess. I specified I liked a non-mathematics based concentration though. That doesn't matter regardless?

If you want to concentrate on Economics or Finance, you need to have good math scores.

But Public Policy = Theoretical Economics (More Sociology than Econometrics) + Political Science. blah.

what school are you from, ccruz?

holyspirit, I got your e-mail. I'll get back to you tomorrow about your essays.

Moanalua High

is there anywhere we can find e-mails of regional reps? i wanna contact elizabeth o'connell but contacting by phone is pretty inconvenient for me...
1) very expensive
2) time difference

calisurf- have you ever seen legally blonde...it's kinda like that. Harvard took her for quirkiness and personality to lighten up the school (not to say you aren't smart or anything)

elemental_rights, you're an international student too?
anyway, i've got elizabeth oconnell's email.

LIZO@admissions.upenn.edu

I emailed her regarding a question (can't remember what it was) in the midst of my application, but she didn't reply. From what i've heard, she seldom replies to students.

Good luck anyway

argh.. she seldom replies?! that's sad...i just e-mailed her anyway..
what can i do if she doesn't reply then?
