Got selected for BU seven-year with paltry merit scholarship

Thank you for everybody’s analysis and support.
[toughyear: I feel your ‘pain’.] Appreciate your comment and advice.
[MiamiDAP: Case usually gives tons of Merit $$ when you are accepted to UG there. My D. went to another bs/md on full tuition Merit scholarship. Ironically, Case Medical school has accepted her when she applied out of her bs/md to several Med. Schools. Case Medical School also indicated that she will get some Merit $$, but they did not say how much.]
satacer: Seems you have the same predicament as us. We are from Houston and I am a Rice alumnus. But she didn’t get a Rice-Baylor interview. Stanford accepted her today. Penn gave her a likely letter. We are waiting to hear from Brown and Case. USC gave her a Trustee full-tuition, but no Keck interview. She was rejected by Rochester - expected b/c research weakness and wait-listed by Northwestern. Interestingly, she was waitlisted by GWU yesterday (they knew we applied as a safety?). The stats of those they admitted and the amount of scholarship money given just don’t make sense.
Texas has more med schools so the chance of admittance is better and instate tuition is lower ($14K/yr). But the only combined program is Rice-Baylor. The number is not great (10/yr) b/c Baylor also has agreements with Baylor U, UT Permian and DeBakey High Sch.
Boston U with a NMF half-tuition would have made sense. But without any aid, Stanford UG with some money is tempting (MiamiDAP’s D experience with traditional route), followed by Texas medical schools.
[col2calz: the prestige of UG school seems to count little in evaluating the GPA. So, students should know, when thinking top UG schools, that the name does not give any advantage – maybe some select opportunities such as research opps.] We worry how she will do at Stanford. USC full-tuition, and hopefully higher GPA is in the mix. If only she had the Bacc/MD option. If we pay BU $420K for our daughter, we don’t know how we can cover her brother (age 13) and her sister (age 12) whose turns are coming up.
Please keep us updated and whether it will be Harvard/Yale, BU, RPI/Albany or USF (satacer) for you? USF is certainly trending up.

“The stats of those they admitted and the amount of scholarship money given just don’t make sense.”

-Some kids have connections and some are URM. Keep in mind that these applicants are in front of everybody. This is fact supported by our close knowledge of some families of applicants to bs/md and overall UG pre-meds. So, do not get discouraged, do not take anything personal, you did not do anything wrong, just learn from any experience. Working hard never fails at the end, positive attitude is a huge bonus. It sounds cliche, but these put you in control and nothing else.

Golfblackhole,

I have been admitted to Rice U with 18K scholarship and Rice ships lot of students to Baylor Med School Next Door. I am leaning towards Rice or RPI/Albany (seven year with no MCAT) or USF/USF if I do not get admitted to Harvard/Yale today. Those are my top three choices. I am going to Tampa this weekend to attend the Honors showcase event followed by stampede to success. The only thing that worries me is the research opportunities around Tampa area. I would like to get involved in the clinical research and publish few papers before I get my BS degree. Rice is the perfect place to be since it is right across from MD Anderson. By early next week, I will weed through all turbidity and make a clear decision. Since I am the only child, my parents are encouraging me to pursue BU. But BU has to be more generous. It seems like lot of kids who attend BU accelerated program is from rich background. Time will tell.

I hope you get accepted to Harvard & Yale. You do have great options.
If you choose Rice, you will have not limited yourself in anyway. The medical school acceptance rate is 92%. Every single person I knew got in. This includes my suite mate who was Chem E, then EE which took 5 yrs. He was not premed and ended up at Baylor. This may be related to our premed advisor sitting on the admissions committee at Baylor at the time. Texas med sch are cheap. And there are 8 of them (9 if you count UNT). Baylor and Southwestern are top 10-20. Rice almost merged with Baylor College of Medicine. The deal fell through at the last minute b/c Baylor financial mess was too much for Rice.

Texas Medical Schools:
Baylor College of Medicine
Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine
University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine
University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School
University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

Tuition:
BCM and Texas med sch (Texan) $6,550 $19,650 (out-of-state)
Average: private medical schools $37,869 $38,337.
Average: public medical schools $18,784 $38,082.

Rice does not have a core curriculum, just distribution. A lot of students double major. A friend of mine was triple major. Some courses were difficult. A lot of us took classes at University of Houston in the summer - 14 of 16 in an Advanced Calculus summer class was from Rice. I found the Psychology Department too late. I did a self-paced course for A+ (4.3), then was a proctor for the same course twice for two more A+. You can maintain a high GPA if you choose your courses right. Rice allows you to declare a major late and lets you drop near midterm, without it appearing on your transcript. You also have the option of taking 4 courses Pass/Fail. This allows some freedom to explore. The people around you are brilliant. I was the only one in my suite of 4, who was not a valedictorian (I did enter college at 16 though!). One guy my year had a 42 MCAT (3rd highest that year nationwide). Rice has a very strong support network of alumni. I can go on and on about Rice. Rice-Baylor combined would have been nice.
Let us know your destination.

Golfblackhole,

Thanks for a detailed response. The news is out. Both H & Y turned me down. Little sad. But it is easy to make the decision now. Less complicated. I did not apply for any other top tier programs except for Emory and Rice. I got in both of them. May be they stamped as a Tier 2 IVY kind of material? LOL!

The competition is insane wherever I go. It is better to grab the best possible opprotunity. I am seriously weighing between the same colleges as I have stated earlier. I will stay in touch with you.

Accepted: Stanford, Penn, Rice (not Baylor), Case PPSP $10K/yr)and BU Accelerated.
USC full-tuition (No Keck).
Rejected: Brown PLME, Rochester REMS.
Decision: Probably Stanford

I am wondering how is it that almost everyone has gotten a USC scholarship? what do the stats have to be? My son was informed that usc would give him half tuition for him being a National Hispanic Scholar, but nothing. And at over $50 a year I don’t see it as being a worthwhile choice. He got accepted to Fordham and BU with a scholarship and Binghamton. Does anyone know with of these three are best for premed students?
