Hi,
I applied early decision to Dartmouth and I was wondering if a 4.0 uw GPA (with a demanding schedule and great ECs) and 2 strong SAT IIs (790 U.S. History, 800 Biology) could compensate for a 2140 SAT superscore (720 CR, 670 M, 750 W).
I really hope so... the SAT seems to be the one weak point of my application.
Thank you for any insight, I really appreciate it!

Any insight would be great!

I don’t think your SAT will be the reason for rejection/deferral…It’ll probably come down to the strength of your ECs, recs, and essay. You might want to consider taking the ACT/SAT again if you are deferred, because you could probably do better.

Thank you for the insight! I’m mainly concerned because I know that these scores affect their USNewsWR ranking and I feel like they’d be pretty hesitant about modest scores. But hopefully they’re as holistic as they claim to be! haha

You might want to consider taking the ACT; it tests more what you know rather than how well you apply that knowledge (SAT). Seeing as you’ve done very well in school (4.0, great SAT subject scores), the ACT might be a better test for you, just a thought.

I think you shouldn’t worry about that right now :)

For all we know, the fate of your application may have already been decided.

Most top tier schools are holistic in their reviewing process and a 2140 SAT score is definitely not bad. There is definitely room for improvement though. Like Cirroalex said, you might want to try the ACT. But, until decisions come out, don’t fret!

thank you for the feedback. At this point, I won’t be taking anymore standardized tests. But I believe the SAT is the only area that is a little shaky in my application(by D standards), so hopefully admissions can come to understand that my real strengths as an applicant lie elsewhere.
And based on what I’ve seen in past year ED threads, there are always a decent number of 2100 range SAT kids who are successful. Hopefully the same happens this year!

Yeah, magentaturtle is right; in no way am I trying to diminish your score. A 2140 is still quite good and is very admittable, even at Dartmouth, it just won’t be a strong point on your app. Good luck!

You weakness is a 670 on the Math SAT I. If you took SAT II Math Level II and scored significantly higher then that would offset your other math test. However, you didn’t.

Math has never been my strong suit… so hopefully they understand(after seeing my subject tests) that my strengths are in biology and history. I listed Biology and History as subjects I would like to pursue as well.

I’m also somewhat worried when I hear people say that Dartmouth is pretty scores/stats driven in admissions. I’d like to think that my SAT won’t doom me if everything else is solid.

If any other CC members have thoughts on my situation–please comment! :)

"I’m mainly concerned because I know that these scores affect their USNewsWR ranking and I feel like they’d be pretty hesitant about modest scores. "

Dartmouth is a college and the nation’s best and most prestigious one. USNWR rankings throw Dartmouth in with universities. Why would Dartmouth be so concerned about its supposed ranking among universities when it is a college?

Apparently test scores don’t matter to Dartmouth becuase everybody with high test scores is getting rejected/deferred right now. 35 on act and got rejected.

I read a quote from Harvard’s Dean of undergraduate admissions where he mentioned that Standardized Testing is actually a lot lesser important than most students think they are and I personally don’t think that Dartmouth would have any different approach towards the SAT. If you check the previous resource threads with official admission decisions, you will notice that several students with SAT scores in the 2100 to 2200 region were accepted whereas students with scores in the 2300+ region were rejected.
