I go to a competitive audition only performing arts high school (in the drama department) where the arts are taken very seriously. My school weighs these theatre grades into my average. Some of the classes are more "academic" such as Theatre History and Voice and Diction, while others such as Improv and Musical Theatre are not considered as academic.

I know many colleges recalculate GPAs to not include electives such as drama or art at regular schools, but since my school is so focused on conservatory training these classes feel like academics to us students.
Does anyone know how colleges will weigh these grades?

are you applying as a theatre arts major to any schools?

So I can speak to this (I go to a similar audition only school, except I am a visual arts major). Generally how it works is that if you are applying for a program that relates to your high school major or would have something like that as you intended major (though this one is a little less common) they will keep some if not all of your grades from major based classes. On the other hand if you are applying for something that does not relate to your major, say a math program or an honors college they will recalculate without those grades. You can contact specific schools and ask their procedure, but usually that is how it works…

What if I’m applying to say, a general liberal arts college but make it clear in my app that I will be studying theatre in college?

They will still not look at those grades. If you are applying for a general program they will follow whatever their normal recalculating GPA policy is (so it is extremely likely that they will recalculate without electives).
