GPA debate

okay this is aggrevating me.
my unweighted GPA is really low (3.3) and weighted it is like a 3.9. I am in the top 10% of my class. Everyone around me has a similar unweighted GPA and we all have 1300+ and 1400+ on SATS so we are not stupid. there are about 300 kids in our grade so top 10% comprises of the top 30 kids.
I keep seeing these ridiculous GPA's like:
4.1 weighted 3.9 unweighted <-HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?
4.5 weighted 4.1 unweighted <- ?
then of course A+'s <- What the heck is an A+?
and some schools see a 90 on a test as an "A", not an A-

its also impossible to get A's in my school. the grades get averaged like so:
1 = A
1.5 = A-
2 = B
2.5 = B-
3 = C
3.5 = C-
4 = D
5 = F
and the range for an A is 1 - 1.25. ONLY .25! While an A- is 1.25 - 1.75. A .5 RANGE! This isn't fair.

So...Will my top 10% and 1400 accurately represent my highschool work?
Also, what are some of your unweighted GPA's who are in the lower part of that 10%.

colleges look at how different high schools grade, and they look at the stats for schools - like mean/median gpa and stuff. so if you've done well at your school, then colleges will see that, because different high schools often have really different grading systems and they know that and take that into account. i don't think you have to worry about looking worse just b/c your school grades differently.

well, i guess i'm in the top 10% at my school, although we have fewer than 200 graduating seniors....unweighted i'm not sure what my gpa is, it's probably between 3.9 and 4.0 though....i have a few b's (likely to get more this crazy year, though). weighted it's a 4.2something or 4.3something.

much luck in everything!

morwen

wow your school must be pretty tough if 3.9 weighted is still top ten percent of the class. I think my school probably has a fair amount of grade inflation, as if you're not taking all AP classes and pulling at least A-'s in them you're kindof behind a lot of people.

I have a 3.8 weighted and 4.115 weighted...which out of a class of 200 is like 11th or 12th percent i think.

Wha? 3.9 in my school is the top 2% of the class.

At our school, 3.67-3.7 (weighted) is still within the top 10% of our class, however, there is only a somewhat small percentage of students (out of the entire class) who have a desire to go to a 4-year-college. Average SAT score is about 966.

Every high school is different in terms of GPA/rank, so that is usually taken into consideration.

Currently have a 3.9 (weighted), 3.5 (unweighted) and am within the top 8% of the class.

wow I have a 3.0902 UW GPA and I'm only in the top 12% or so. Out of 800 kids I'm like 90ish. and weighted i'd have I think a 4.5 or so. but our avg SAT is like 1200 or so. yeah its pretty competitive.

that's funny... you guys think YOU'VE got it bad? to be in the top 25% of my class you have to have a 3.7 or higher

I have a 3.97 uw GPA, and a 4.6 w. Honors and AP are weighted the same (5.0). I'm in the top 1%, which is about 10-12 students. My class is about 1,200 people. I go to a VERY large public high school.

i have a 3.6 uw and a 4.59 weighted, we get a point for honors/ap classes it's pretty ****ty though, a 4.59 just puts me in the top 5% for weighted, and if u go unweighted i'm like... 70/450... so it's really crazy...

patientlywaiting
thats my point. how can anyone compare the gpa's of different schools. you may not have it worse than us if a 3.7 is equivalent to a 3.4 at someone else's school.

you can't compare GPA and esp Class rank, which is why its stupid, but no one cares. We tried for years to get my school to get rid of CR, nope they refused to, and they won't weight it either. But then again the whole proccess is screwed up, this is just one more thing that makes it bad.

I'm 3.93 weighted and 35th out of 277. This is on a 4.71 scale. . .I've never seen a scale like it before, but I guess it works.

EDIT: For the top 35, the average SAT score is probably 1380.

what is the average weighting system for the 4.0? our school is really different... 4.33 for a+, 4.0 for a and so on with 3.67 as an a-... i'm wondering because i never know how to unweight my gpa... a 4.58 becomes a 3.6 by our scale without weighting, it's incredible

oh wow....at our school it's weighted by what class you're taking, i.e. regular = 4.00, honors = 4.4, gifted = 4.44, AP = 4.48. but it doesn't matter if you get an a+/a/a-, it's still a 4.something.

oh... so an a is always a 4, and then weighted based on the type of class... that makes sense, more than ours does at least

Great discussion....DD's weighted GPA is 3.68 (unweighted 3.5). She is 12/195. Her high school does NOT inflate grades. It is not easy to get all A's (as you can see by her GPA). She has also wondered about all of the folks with GPA's that are above 4.0.

patiently my school is even worse...
I have a 3.93 Weighted and that is exactly top 25%
Also, the top 10 kids have an average SAT score of 1600, the top 10% I believe is a little bit over a 1500 and the top 20% is about 1400

hopkinslax, my school is the EXACT same way. . .and I have a 3.93 GPA. Seven kids in my class scored a 1600 on the SAT and I think the school said something like 18 or 19 more were over 1550. Meanwhile, I'm chillin' in 35th out of 277 with a 1320.

okay I have a 3.9 and I'm 90/800 and I have a 1440, which is medicore for my GPA at my school. yeah our schools are just super competitive, I hate it. but it means i have smart friends, which is good.

yeah at my school my 3.94 / 4 unweighted only makes me 21/308
so it's ridiculous
