I am a rising senior at a somewhat prestigious private school in nyc. While I do have a 3.8 gpa, I'm afraid that it will not impress the schools I'm trying to attend(ivy league etc) because of all of the 4.0's out there. Will my gpa still be a strength considering the school I'm coming from? Thanks.

You can’t just look at one metric as GPA and make a decision on whether not you’ll be competitive for selective colleges. There’s a lot more to the application than GPA alone.

Yes, I understand that. I was asking if my gpa is a strength, even though it isn’t a 4.0, considering what kind of school I attended. Thanks for your reply

If it is a feeder school to the Ivies then, yes. If it is not, then no. You are looked at in the context of your school.
