GPA vs. Class Rank: small class

So im in a class of only 7 people, of which i graduated first. I had a 3.51. My school doesnt really do class rank so they just say Im in the top 10% of my class, and they give me a benefit in the counseler part of my application as far as percentages and such.

My counseler tells me that having the low GPA is not horrible because my percent in my class and percentages on my application apparemtly make up for it.

Any feedback on it?

Thanks~!

Well, it does put things in context. And they’ll look at your classes and grades specifically.

Looking over the supplements I turned in already, it also says how many people your class was made up of so being top 10% or first in your class might not help much since Counselor Supplement tells number of people in your class.

yeaa its true.

A 3.51 UW GPA will significantly decrease your chances at top schools. Not to be harsh - it’s just that almost all applicants who get accepted to top-30 universities have unweighted GPAs that are 3.75 or higher.

That being said, there’s plenty of great colleges that’d be happy to have you.

The problem I see with your school is if say your school is insanely hard, there isn’t a large subject pool to compare your gpa with and you get screwed even if your counselor says you are top 1% he has seen. Do you have any AP scores?

Your class rank won’t make up for your GPA. You’re just in a bad spot. -.-

Actually, if the valedictorian has a 3.5, it must be a hard school. Since you don’t have much to compare grades to, scores will be even more important! Your subject scores will determine how good your school is. If a A in math turns out as a 570 subject test, you are out. But if you got a B in biology and an 800 test… You see the logic. In a class of 7, they will look at your scores over a statistically insignificant class rank.

I suggest buying A is for Admission by Michelle hernandez, she has some good advice for you
