My school has a weighted and unweighted GPA system, is there a way on the common app for me to list both. My class rank is based on my weighted GPA, but which one looks better on my application.
Weighted GPA: 5.38/6
Unweighted GPA: 4.0/4

Use the weighted GPA, the college will know something is up if you use 4.0/4.0 and you’re anything less than ranked number 1. Also, if you’re number one, use the weighted GPA to show them you’re not just tied with a bunch of other people.

I wish they ask for both. My Son has the same issue which one to report.
His HS transcript shows.
Weighted as 5.89/5
Unweighted as 4.0/4

His class rank is based on Weighted too…

@dadfor2014, the weighted GPA you posted can’t be 5.89/5. On a 5 pt scale, the highest possible weighted GPA would be a 5.0. It may just have been a typo, but be sure your S inputs accurate numbers on his app. Schools will see from his transcript he has a 4.0, so entering the weighted number is the way to go.

My D’s College Guide Counselor told her that her weighted GPA is 4.5 out of 4.0 scale. Rank based on this weighted GPA. My D school is IB school.

Is it possible that you can get over 4.0 GPA out of 4.0 scale?

Yes. If you have some honors/AP/IB classes, they will be weighted, which means they count for more. It is possible that by weighting your classes, you might have over a 4.0.

My son’s gpa was 4.2/4.0. Said so right there on his transcript :)

word of caution: my dog’s gpa in middle school was 3229/4.0 but he could not get into great high schools like vandegrift high school for the white and nerdy. he manage to get into a sub-par high school named westwood for the yellow and brown, but he only managed a 1377/4.0 gpa. with that said, my dog got into his dream school of colorado school of mines where he pop molly all day without sweating. i guess the lesson to be learned is to always reach for the stars and if you fail at least you’ll be on the moon eh?
