Grad admission

Hi everyone..

I am in mechanical engineering . I want to study in top univ. like

Caltech
Stanford
MIT

The problem is I have 10 point scale grading system. and I have 5/10. Now I am not sure that its 2.5/4 in US scaling system.. I have 770 in quant and 620 in Verbal. I have done one internship and one research work published.

I want to ask to other students with 10 point grading system, that how to convert my scores into GPA??

ANd what are my chances?

Plz plz help me..:(

If you score is 5/10, that is 2/4 in GPA, unweighted. This is not a competitive score. Any idea what your class rank is? Decile is fine too.

My class rank is 7 and my percentile is 83…

sid, where did you do your undergraduate studies? where was your research published?

I’m not done with ug… I am in Ahmedabad institute of tech.

sid, the college you are attending doesn’t seem to be well known. I couldn’t find a single faculty member with a PhD at your institute.

Honestly, my adivice is - don’t waste your money applying to MIT/CalTech/Stanford. Try to get into ME/MTech program at IIT/IISc. Then, you will have a much better chance of getting into a good university in the US.

That really isn’t true, Tippu. I’ve heard of people who went to Cornell and Stanford even after graduating from relatively unknown colleges.

^ give some examples. 770 in GRE quantitative is ~ 87th percentile.

i don’t know much about Indian colleges. my opinion about AIT is based purely on what i saw on their web site. who knows?

sid123: Your best bet would be to try this forum:

AIT isn’t really a recognized college and 5 pointer with that kind of a GRE percentile should probably be concentrating on getting into a decent Indian college first. IISc itself accepts people in a fraction of the top 1% of GATE. So yeah, work hard towards IIT/IISc, but be prepared to go into any decent college your scores get you into. Good luck!

Yeah… I can say my college isnt that well. I am trying to increasing my score to about 6.7 from 10 coz i still have 4 semseters to go i think above 6.7 will be fine??? I have seen people from Gujarat univ with 60% scores get GPA 3.6 in their transcripts… So 6.7/10 can nearly get me a 3.4-3.6… Will that gpa be fine…

No. Sorry.

sid, if u have 4 more semesters to go then u must have just completed second yr of undergrad. given that u have research work published already, u have a great future. i m sorry for my earlier comments. u deserve to be at one of those schools.

wish u all the best.

Arey no need to say sorry… I think I gave inadequate info…

I was feeling kinda low hearing those all answers but finally a positive one…

It’s motivating…:))
Thanks…

u have been on CC since 2007. that is impressive!
u r an old timer.

Yeah… When I was considering for undergrad in us I created it but I had no financial support to go… I started posting recently… I am not sure about my gpa score so I have mentioned different gpa in my posts… I maybe try to give gre again and raise score to 1500 then it may work…

Anybody can help me ?
I’ll take TOEFL and GRE on October.
Now I am doing masters in Electrical Engineering in JNTUH !
first term marks are 77 out of 100 ( I expected 90 !!! ).
bachelors GPA 81 out of 100.
I think I can get good marks on TOEFL at least.
Any chance ?! or it is so soon !?
