I would have put this question in the financial aid forum but I figured it would be mostly full of undergrads who would not be able to answer it and might be better served over here.

I managed to avoid having to take an additional loan out my first year in grad school but it would be less stressful on me if I could get plus funds this year. I have some adverse credit history which would prevent me from qualifying on my own, and am thinking of asking someone to cosign for me. I wish I had other options but at this point I don't, so I would like to make things as smooth as possible making sure no harm befalls the cosigner.

At this point, I don't know how loan repayment works at all having been deferred up til now, but I will be graduating next year and done with school for the foreseeable future. Questions:

When I begin repaying my loans, is the best choice going to be to consolidate them (don't even know if that's an option, don't know why it wouldn't be but I'm too unfamiliar with loan repayment to know this stuff)? Or will I be able to pay the grad PLUS separately? I just want to make sure that even if none of my other loans get paid, this one will.

The principle will be about 8k. If for some reason I were to pay this separately, should I strive to pay it as quickly as possible (have heard student loan debt is "good debt")?

How long do I have to make consecutive payments before the cosigner is removed from the loan?

TIA
