Grad school admissions

I'm applying to PhD programs in a social science/humanities discipline this year. Though these programs are quite competitive, I feel like I stand a decent chance with my grades, scores, etc. I do not plan to mention the fact that I have Asperger's Syndrome on most of my applications. However, a few ask for a "diversity statement," which I gather is largely for the purpose of obtaining fellowships. Would mentioning AS as part of the "diversity" I bring hurt my chances?

It's hard to say. I am guessing (and this is just a guess) that the "diversity statement" is so they give fellowships to students who fall into different racial and ethnic groups, and to get a fairly even balance of men and women, and to try to get some who are first generation college or from poorer families. My guess would be not to mention it because from what I know (which I have to admit isn't much) there is a lot of misunderstanding and lack of knowledge about Asperger's. So it all depends on the adcom. If they're knowledgeable I don't think it would hurt but if they're not, it could. So if it were me, I'd go on the side of caution and not disclose it. Good luck.
