I'm a EECS major at a small engineering college. 3.5 GPA, summer research/internships. Have done well on Putnam (does this count for anything?). Interested in grad school for a few EECS fields (robotics, quantum computation).

No idea what schools I should be looking for. Any help?

Oh, and I guess I should say that I'm looking for a PhD, but I don't want to get into debt. Preferably schools in an urban/suburban setting, but willing to consider otherwise.

I’m in a similar boat, and would appreciate any thoughts.

Well I’m 4 years behind you (going in to EECS, interested in robotics/quantum computation), but the grad students (Berkeley) all said that they applied to Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, and then a couple more (maybe Caltech, Harvard, CMU, Cornell?). They all were going to Berkeley or MIT for grad school EECS.

Those are really the only three that I’m familiar with, but here is US News:

Electrical Engineering:

Computer Science:

No EECS on their site, but you can look through and analyze the schools and they should say on their site which majors will be dealing with what you’re interested in. For example, on Caltech’s site, Applied and theoretical physics dealt with quantum computation (along with CS, but you could go at it in different ways).

Putnam doesn’t do much for you unless you are a fellow.

I know CMU is one of the best for robotics, with a 3.5 you MIGHT have a chance at a masters.
