I am a first gen trying to navigate this complicated path of trying to attend grad school. I am about to graduate in May with a bachelors in Psychology. I was initially going to pick a clinical mental health counseling program and get an m.a. in that, but I have so many questions on what I can even do with an M.A. I am confused on whether or not I should just go into a social work program and focus on that since I believe I can get more opportunities through that, but I am very unsure. If anyone has any advice please let me know. Thank you, from Illinois.
What are your career goals? That’s going to largely help determine what graduate program would be most fitting for you.
@JCAM01 - Welcome to the Forum! I suggest you speak with your Career Center and Faculty mentors to see if you can clarify your career goals. It might be a good idea to start working for some time and then apply for a graduate program once your goals are more clear.
Yeah, if you don’t know what you want to do, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to get an MA right now.
If you get an MA in clinical mental health counseling, then the career path for that is to be a clinical mental health counselor…that’s what you can do with the MA. I mean, of course people change careers and do other things all the time, but typically, if you’re going for that master’s the reason why is you want to be a counselor.
