Hey guys, I was wondering if anybody could comment on the claim of grade deflation at Fordham. I recently have heard that it's a problem and want to know if it's really so or if "A" work is really awarded with an A.

We had heard about this too but my S ended up with all A’s and A-'s his first semester. He did work for them, they didn’t come easy, but they are absolutely possible. One very smart thing he did was to develop a relationship with all of his professors and get their feedback on papers and assignments BEFORE they were due. He found they were all very accessible and willing to guide him.

Ehh… I recently wanted to find out my midsemester grade. I scored a 98 on the midterm and scored a 85 on one homework assignment (when i had 90s+ on all of the others). My professor told me that my homework was “wobbly” and said A-. And then I scored a perfect 100 on the next midterm. Moron.

I had a class of 80 or so students and no one received an A. Only two or three received an A-. The “average” score was a C+ and the most popular was a B-. I should have received an A (seriously, I scored As on all the papers and a 95 on the midterm, solid final) and then got a B+.

But that was last semester. This semester is a LOT better and I have all As. I don’t even do the work in half of the classes.

Fordham differentiates between +/-?

Did you really talk to all 80 kids in that class last semester about their grades? Or are you reporting the stats you gathered from kids you talked to? Just curious. I guess grade deflation could depend on the professor.

And I’m glad that you have all A’s so far this semester but hey, DO THE WORK! It’s what you went to college for! :D

Yes.

My S finds that the grade distribution varies greatly by prof. Some give a lot of A’s while others hardly give out any.

grade deflation is encouraged, but not mandated, so it is largely up to the professor. Some departments may have different grade deflation policies. But in my experience and from what I’ve heard from my friends, if you work hard and do your classwork well, it is possible to get an A.

I challenged my grade with the TA and he disclosed all of the information about the class.
