Some of parents at recent scholarship competition were worried about grade deflation at Furman and inability to get A's and how that affected med school admissions when competing against other schools where not so hard to maintain high GPA. Any input from current students.

Not a student, but we do have twins at Furman who are rising seniors. DH is an attorney with a AMlaw 100 size firm, and says Furman grads do very well in law school acceptance. Below is the most recent data for Furman’s students test data and acceptance to medical school. We have also been concerned about grade deflation at FU-what we have been told is that like Davidson, adcoms to graduate schools know about Furman’s rigor and take that into account. Depending upon which type of graduate school or pre-professional program,I would ask child’s department head for data from the individual department about grad. school admissions. FWIW, DD has done 2 semesters at Georgia Tech and professors at Tech have been very complimentary about her writing and analytic skills-for which DD gives Furman a lot of credit.

I have had no experience with grade deflation at all, although I’m also taking the pre-law route. My brother went to Davidson and had lower than 3.4 and got into medical school and is graduating at the top of his class next month, so I wouldn’t look into that too much.

It’s possible to get A’s. I know of several (but few) students who’ve had 4.0’s for at least the their first 3 semesters here.
