How bad is the grade deflation at Wake? I try very hard in most of my classes but there are definitely some subjects where I tend to work less (language). Is every class at Wake very difficult because I don't really want to be overwhelmed. Anyway is the grading fair or just hard?

I'm not trying to be Debby Downer or anything..but I have heard the grade deflation is awful. I have a friend who left due to how bad the grade deflation was.

P.S. And she could barely transfer because her GPA was too low (for most colleges when you're trying to transfer.)

First of all, there's no grade deflation at Wake. There's rampant grade inflation at a lot of other schools. Grades at Wake have been going up just like they are at all institutions, really, except they've been increasing at a slower rate.

I'll admit that I think I've worked harder for my grades than my friends at some other schools. But I don't feel that the workload was unfair. There've been classes that I've worked myself to the bone over, and there've been classes that I found to be easy A's. Grades are NEVER, to my knowledge, curved down. A curve at Wake can only help you.

To answer your specific question, I've never felt like the grading was unfair. There are high standards, sure, but it's not unfair. In fact, I've found professors remarkably approachable to discuss ways to do better in their classes.

Edited to add: I'm graduating from Wake next week, and my post-graduate plans are what I wanted them to be when I started Wake, so I definitely haven't had the same experience that Gangsturr123's friend did with a gpa that is lower than it might possibly have been at other schools (although I actually think it's about what it would be anywhere) being a hindrance.

Can you tell us a bit of your plans and how you think you've been prepped at DemonDeacon U? Good luck!!

I'm headed to medical school next year. I feel like I've been not only prepped wonderfully for medical school, I feel like I've also been given the chances to make sure that I'm doing what I want to do. I'm a biology major, and the biology department definitely isn't tailored to only the pre-meds. In my upper level classes, I've taken courses from all across the spectrum of biology. I've also done research. Until this year, I was also considering MD/PhD programs and PhD programs because I enjoyed my research experiences so much.

More than the science departments, Wake has given me a true liberal arts education. I've taken courses from 15 (I think) different departments while I've been here, and I'm actually leaving with courses from other departments that I wish that my schedule had permitted me to take. I had the ability to take a semester abroad. These experiences and others have, I feel, helped me to understand people better, and I expect that will be more useful in the future than any one course or any one grade.

In my experience, Wake grads aren't looked down upon because their gpa's are lower (and, again, I'm not totally sure I buy the idea that they are).

Congratulations, ginnyvere, on your accomplishments at Wake, and best wishes for med school!

I always thought that the grading at Wake was rough compared to other schools and wondered whether there would be any negative impact on a graduate. I graduated with a 3.0 (I was a straight-A student in high school) and probably ranked right in the middle of the Wake graduating class. I went on to business school at Ohio State and ended up number 1 in that MBA class - the program was very easy compared to what I experienced at WFU. Wake is very well thought of by graduate schools and the admissions folks know of the tough grading standards (a 3.0 at Wake = 3.6 at other schools). Terrific education which taught me how to think - invaluable to my business career now.

there is rampant grade deflation at wake. a professor told me in march that his dept. pressures the faculty to keep them low by inflating the value of Bs and Cs should students inquire about their grades.

you can be a superstar at schools with similar repute while doing the same amount of work or less.

p.s. i transferred and attended a 3rd university for a summer course so my statement has teeth.

p.s. i transferred and attended a 3rd university for a summer course so my statement has experience backing it up.

OK, BadNews -- now I get it. There's a definite trend in your comments. Clearly Wake wasn't a match for you. It happens. Good luck at your new school.

good thing several other students posted the same sentiment, since mine was discarded.

the average wake GPA is 2.7 - considering the amazing abilities of most of the student body, that should say something.

p.s. i transferred into wake and graduate next year. and did you even attend WF? i see you're a parent, not a student, so I'm not sure what you can accurately contribute to this topic.

If you dislike it so much, why did you stay? And yes, I am a parent, of a current student. What she describes is vastly different from your comments. No, Wake isn't perfect -- show me one college that is. But I guarantee if she disliked it as much as you do, she wouldn't still be there. (For the record, I read your posts to mean you had attended Wake and transferred out.)

I've posted it before, but I'll do so again now.

The average GPA is actually a 3.10 at Wake Forest.

Wake Forest has around a 94-96% freshmen retention rate. Plenty of students like it there, but clearly BadNews' experience shows that it's not for everyone. Nonetheless, that's a pretty good retention rate...

I don't think there is rampant grade deflation at Wake, I think there is just less grade inflation than at other schools. I don't know of that many students with GPAs below 3.0.

but I suggest the one certain poster with a negative attitude go outside for some fresh air. I hope you are more positive in your future job interviews. Wake is a great school but only for those that are seroius about their studies and don't mind hard work.
