Hello Hoos,

Would anyone mind giving their opinion about the grading system at UVA. In your opinion, do you feel like UVA practices grade inflation or deflation at the CAS.

Thanks

Hello Hoos,

Would anyone mind giving their opinion about the grading system at UVA. In your opinion, do you feel like UVA practices grade inflation or deflation at the CAS.

Thanks

The average GPA is a 3.2 (common data set). I would say it’s moderately inflated.

Thanks for the quick response hazelorb :). I’ll see everyone at UVA tommorow!

I’d say grades are about where they should be.

For most (NOT ALL) classes, it’s hard to get an A, possible to get an A- with solid work, probable to get a B+ reasonable work, and you should expect to get a B with regular effort. If you work hard, you’ll do fine.

But you can make things easier on yourself! Grades mostly depend on the class and professor. Everyone has different standards. If you take the exact same set of classes with the easiest professors possible, I would expect a result around 0.3 grade points better than if you had taken the same classes without paying attention to this.

Yeah it is also worth keeping in mind
(1) professor choice as mentioned above, see thecourseforum .com before registering for ANY class! some psych classes also bell curve which is obnoxious.
(2) students at UVA come in with on average 4.0 GPA’s (is there a real number for this somewhere), so going to an average 3.2 GPA is clearly a huge change for some people. The biggest change for me was the +/- weighting (a 90… or even 89.5… was a solid 4.0 A at my high school).
(3) It’s possible to get an A in many classes with solid work, if you want a breakdown of the classes I got A-'s vs A’s in I am happy to post that. I know that it is basically top 10 to be Phi Beta Kappa but that means 1 out of every 10 people is getting A’s in the majority of their classes.

Agree. Some classes will be somewhat easy, whereas others will be brutal. Certain classes are pegged “weed-outs” for a reason. For example organic chemistry will be one of, if not the, most challenging courses pre-meds will take. This is true, though, at ALL schools not simply UVa. I have heard many of the engineering classes are also very, very challenging. UVa is a composite of ALL the smartest kids from high schools across the nation, and if the avg GPA is a 3.2 you must recognize that some of you won’t be making all A’s like you probably did in hs. Some kids will indeed make Bs.

My friend @ DOTL sat in on a class while I toured the campus and he said the average for the test they were going over was 61% with one person receiving a 98%. So, I plan on working my hardest to stay above the average so when the grade is curved I will end up with a high A.

@jc40: I couldn’t agree more. I told this one girl that got into UVA at my school that she wasn’t going to get a 4.0 in college, and she got mad at me lol… I was just trying to put things into perspective for her, but she got all mad and implied that I was calling her stupid or something. I don’t know, she will understand what I mean soon enough.

Yea, I’m a little worried now. At the McIntire presentation, they said the average GPA of entering students was a 3.62… Honestly, I’m shoting for a 4.0, but that is going to basically be impossible. I’m worried I may not be able to pull a 3.7+

lol, I never met anyone with a 4.0 at UVA. The closest was a 3.9.

I would be happy to have a 3.6-3.7 at UVA, especially since I’m going pre-med. :)

I want a 3.8 or higher…

well I am going for McIntire, so 3.7+ is preferable but I want that 3.9+ , which is easier said than done,

On a lighter note I heard you need a 3.4 + to make deans list.

3.4 is Dean’s List.

It depends what classes you take! I have a 3.66 but last semester I took two 3000 level classes, three 2000 level classes and a 1000 level class.

I want 3.6+ haha… Enough to get a high distinction for a science major, that’s all I really want =D. If I can do better, then WOO. But otherwise, I’d be happy. The problem is I am majoring in Physics/Math… It’ll be difficult I think. =

omg math major lol . good luck

I majored in math, it wasn’t so bad. I ended up with a 3.8 overall. My worst grades were in my general ed requirement classes, where I had little motivation or interest in the subject matter.
The engineering school is a completely different boat if that is the class you sat in on. Their averages are much lower, but get curved at the end of the semester.

Hazel…FABULOUS GPA!!! I realize the IAS gives the GPA of the university as a whole:

[IAS Historical Data: Mean Cumulative GPA by Level](http://www.web.virginia.edu/IAAS/data_catalog/institutional/historical/gpa/fall_cumgpa_by_level.htm)

however, I wish the average for individual majors was published. Maybe it is somewhere, and I simply overlooked it.

Thanks, I got Phi Beta Kappa last year. I don’t know of anywhere that publishes GPA by major other than comm school pre-admitted… And majors that require a 3.4…

Would anyone mind listing the GPA breakdown?

At my high school anything from a 90-100 is a 4.0. Because of this, I have a 4.0 UW (well that is before I started slacking off this semester).

I don’t plan on making all As at uni but I’d like to know UVa’s scale so I’ll know what I should aim for!

Thanks bunches (((:
