grade yet another SAT II Writing Essay??

I know I've already posted one SAT II Writing Essay, but I took what everyone said to heart, worked on it, and here I have another essay. Please tell me what I would get (2-12). Thanks!! I LOVE YOU GUYS ON CC!

Consider the following statement and assignment. Then write the essay as directed.

"In my experience, the most important element for success in life is ___."
Assignment: Write an essay that completes the statement above. Explain the reasons behind your choice.

A common maxim is “if at first you don’t succeed, pick yourself up and try again.” It is because I agree with this adage that I believe the most important element for success in life is commitment to what you want to achieve. My choice is supported by the historical example of Mahatma Gandhi and the personal example of my qualifying for the Siemens Westinghouse Science Competition Regional Finals.

Mahatma Gandhi was sent to England as a child and grew up to be a fairly skilled lawyer who had several pathways to wealth and financial success open to him. However, when he saw the injustices being done in his native India, he felt he had an obligation to stay and liberate his country. Of course, this was not easy, and his attempts were often met with British hostility. In fact, the great leader was often imprisoned and even beaten by the British Authorities. However, Gandhi believed strongly in his cause, and committed himself to freeing his country from Western rule. It was because of this commitment that Gandhi was able to sustain himself through the excessive abuse and intoleration he faced. Eventually, Gandhi faced immense success, and his persistence in the issue of a free India led to his dream being realized.

On a more personal level, commitment has been shown to bring success by the example of my success in the Siemens-Westinghouse Science Competition. My partner and I had started a project dealing with marine biology in December of our sophomore year. Living in Arizona, this project was difficult to eve get off the ground. However, we persisted, and eventually gained the aid of a store owner who helped fund our marine project in the desert. Things were still rough however, and our initial attempts at a groundbreaking discovery failed. In late March, we submitted what we had to a local science fair and did very poorly. However, we continued with the same research, undaunted, and even stepped things up, sometimes putting in over fifteen hours a week. Finally, our commitment shone through and were selected as regional finalists for the Westinghouse Science Competition, a mighty honor. Clearly here, commitment was key to our success.

Thus, it is clear that, through the examples of the leader Mahatma Gandhi and my success in a research project, commitment is a vital element in achieving success.

i think it's pretty good though i am not good at grading other's essay.

The essay is very good and qualifies for 10+ however i suggest you stray away from "this is supported by blah blah." Find a more compelling way to state your thesis. Still, it is written very well

I give a 10

10 as well. If you pull off a 10 on the essay and get none to one wrong on the mutiple choice, you will probably get an 800 on the New SAT writing section. A 12 essay would have to make some extrordinary connection between the two examples. You site them as a list. Still good/great essay, though.

good essay. i think the 'this is supported by' is ok. SAT II is all abotu signposting anyway, although perhaps not ideally that explicit.

I got a 10 (a crap essay in my opinion -- didn't quite finish), 2 MCs wrong, and still got an 800.

best of luck

However, I have a friend that took a PR class for the new SAT. She said that for the essay, they want you to do things like say "I agree that..." as your first sentence, if the prompt is whether or not you agree to a statement. Also, she said they told her to start every paragraph with something like "Another reason is..."

What are you supposed to do?

um.. zogoto, i guess that method is for low scorers.

any opinion (would the essay for SAT2 Writing better to be systematic ??)
