So, my daughter and I were looking at a school application checklist, and one of the items listed is a graded essay for either english or history. I didn’t recall her writing an essay in the last few years, and when I asked her she confirmed that there was none of this in the last few years. They basically do presentations using tablets and smartboards or other mediums. How should we handle this then? She will have the same teachers this year she had last because her class is a 7/8 split.
I have the same problem however, for the school I am applying to (SPS) it does say that part of the application was optional.
For my daughter her English teach had these journal responses with no lengthy essays. We asked if DD could expand upon one of those for a grade. That worked fine.
I would confirm with the school that there are no essays this year (perhaps the teacher could grade one - or at least put in comments if they have a written assignment). I would find it a bit unusual not to teach kids any essay writing in 8th grade - it was a very important part of my kids’ middle school humanities curriculum and prepared them well for high school. If there really are no essays then talk to the AOs of each school and ask for suggestions.
Thanks for the suggestion. We are planning on asking my daughter’s teacher about it when the school year starts. Maybe something can be worked out.
We were in the same situation, Guskid wrote an essay about some random topic and his English teacher "graded: it, even though it really wasn’t a school assignment. Worked for him!
We had the same situation, we too solved it like @gusmom2000.
