this is one of those relatively unanswerable questions because it depends on you for the most part, and your definition of "difficult". I will say though that by and large, it's probably a fairly difficult place to get good grades- ie. you have to EARN them. This is because most classes at UCI are BIG and all the professors are doing is giving you a grade based on test scores (the way it should be). However, I've taken a couple classes at some JC's where they factor other things in such as enthusiasm for the class, attendance, and just overall impression of how hard you work (see enthusiam). At UCI it's not this way.

What major are you planning on? Keep in mind UCI is one of the better schools in the country (ranked 46 now overall??), so you're going to be around a lot of bright people. It will require you to work, but if you put in sufficient time you should get good grades, but then that depends on what you define as good (is a B- good enough or do you want straight A's?). In the Bio and Physical Sciences, very large classes are curved to where about 17-20% get A's. Bio keeps this policy throughout ALL their classes (from what I've experienced), but the chemistry department, if you took upper division courses- doesn't really follow that and most people will pass the class, regardless of how bad they did (obviously a couple people will have to fail)- so there's probably some differences between departments once you get to upper division classes.

pharmDstudent,

thank you for ur kind reply. well, i'm a transfer student (junior level) and
am planning to major in information and computer science, which
i study at my current institution.

honestly, i want straight A's, if possible. i understand it's pretty hard to
say "how much effort" is needed to achieve it. but, say, how many hours
a day do students usually spend doing their homework, writing reports,
and so on?

Heh, sorry to say I know next to nothing about ICS other than that it's really really hard for a lot of people. I can't tell you about their homework or anything else they have to do.... sorry.

What else do you plan to take outside ICS? ie- do you have any BREADTH requirements that you'll still have to do b/c I may be able to give you some suggestions or feedback on certain classes.

yeah, i expected ICS is one of the rigorous disciplines there. thank you
anyway.

i don't know what kind of classes outside ICS i'll have to take at this
point. maybe i'll have to meet some requirements, especially i need to
take some English classes, i think.
