Grades Impact Admission?

Hey,

So I got a B- in Computer Science, I am a junior and I wanted to major in Computer Sciece. I really enjoy programming and am committed to learn more programming languages. In school, I got a B- in the AP Computer Science Program. Therefore, will I still be granted admissions in a college even though I got a B- in the class AP Computer Science class, even though I wanted to major in a Computer Science?

How much will that one grade impact me?

You can still get into a university as a computer science student, even with a B- in AP computer science. Just don’t limit your applications to the top colleges for compsci, such as Carnegie Mellon. For example, U MASS Amherst has a very well regarded computer science program (top 20 compsci programs for grad students, lots of good faculty), and you don’t have to have all A’s to get in there. They will also look at your math test scores and math grades and other science grades. Perhaps you could take another computer science class at a community college over the summer to show your dedication to the subject and if you get a good grade it will prove you can do college level work in the subject.

It’s not a matter of whether that one grade will affect you, it’s a matter of what that grade is telling you. Whenever one gets a low grade in an intro subject one wants to major in, it’s a good time to evaluate why. You need to be very honest and ask yourself why, in a subject you want to major in, you managed to get a B-.

There are many reasons that can happen, but most of them are a warning sign that maybe you shouldn’t go that direction. Only you can answer the question, just make sure you don’t lie to yourself about the honest answer, or you are might have a very rough time in college, struggling with a major you possibly don’t have either a talent or passion for.

I wouldn’t worry about it at all if you math grades are good.

+1 for MrMom.

Although self-reflection about the reason for the low grade is important, it is definitely possible to do well in comp sci after a low grade in HS. Our S earned a C in his AP Comp Sci class and is currently a successful comp sci major at a very selective LAC.

Like I said, it’s not the grade, it’s the reason for the grade. If it’s a case of a bad teacher, outside forces, too high a workload, just didn’t realize how hard it was, dug myself a hole, etc., sure, you can turn it around and major in it. If it’s a matter of it never made sense, I was bored, hated the class, I worked really hard but never got it - maybe CompSci isn’t for you.

Only the OP can answer that question honestly.
