Grades in USNA

I know a guy from my USMC JROTC unit who is in his plebe year at the academy. There are rumors in the unit that his math grades are getting very unsat and he could be dropped. What are your thoughts on this? CAn they drop you for bad grades in a subject or is this bull crap?

They can drop you like a bad habit, but some details are missing.

Is he ONLY bilging the one class, and getting A's in the others? If so, he might get by, at least for a while (a semester, maybe a year, tops). If, however, he's running a bunch of D's AND bilging that course, then he's in deep trouble.

All I know his math is doing horrible. I need to find out more. The rest, from what he told me on his holiday leave, are pretty good.

If math (which I assume to be Calculus) is the only problem subject, it depends on his grade. If he gets a D, he gets a D and moves on. Not great, but it happens. If he fails the course, he will likely end up in summer school retaking it, as passing (or validating) 3 semesters of Calc is required.

If there are problems in multiple subjects, such that his GPA is less than a 2.0, I believe he would go to an Academic Board at semester's end. The Board looks at a variety of issues to determine whether the mid should be kept or sent home.

USNA offers a number of programs to help students academically, such as a study skills program and extra instruction from the professor. It's important to take advantage of them because -- well, they work. Also, if it ever comes to an Ac Board, demonstrating that you've done everything possible to improve your grades can only help.

USMC457 - Just curious, do you know what his math background in HS was? I'm wondering how prepared he was to tackle the math at USNA before he arrived.

Perhaps if he has a good math foundation he will be able to pull it out after all...

Im sure he took the neccesary algebra courses and geometry courses. It wouldnt suprises me if he doubled up on calculus and precalculas in a year. From what you are saying, and from what I know, I dont think they will drop him.

Based on prior posts, supported by current mids, a lot depends on what the plebe is doing to try to be sat. Does he take advantage of the eXtra instruction available, or tutoring? If he is not showing initiative to take care of the academic deficiency, and his overall is below 2.0, he could be in serious trouble.
