Grades

I'm really worried that my grades will prevent me from being accepted anywhere. My average has always been 9-9,5 (out of 10) but has fallen down to a 7,3 with a 5 in math.

My school is officially a public school, but there are no private schools here so admission (you have to be admitted, you can't just enroll) is based on grades and performance. The average of admitted students is 9 but the average midterm grade after the first semester is 7. My school has super high standards and is generally considered the best in my country(all of our presidents went here).

I'm also a year ahead, and I was wondering if that weighs in at all; are many applicants a year ahead? Could my being a year ahead (I am applying for my real year) make up for lower grades last semester?

You don’t say where you are applying. If you are only applying to top tier schools (20-25% acceptance rate or less), this may be a problem. Hopefully you picked a range of schools.

a lot of applicants to elite schools (ie A, E) come from super competitive schools, so you’re not alone in that grade deflation boat. however, in your teacher recs i believe your teachers were supposed to send a rough grade distribution chart (or something along the lines of that). honestly, if you got great teacher recs, i wouldn’t worry about it…
however, 5/10 in math is pretty bad, no matter how good your school might be  but there’s nothing you can really do about that now but focus on getting your grades up, and cross your fingers for march 10th…

best of luck!

Thank you for the answers. I know that grade is bad but it’s only from a single test, that’s the only grade we get for midterms. All our other assignments and smaller tests aren’t added to the grade until spring, when we get our final grade. I was actually second highest in math in my grade last year.

None of my other grades are significantly bad though. And I do have great recs and great SSAT scores. My math SSAT is in the 90’s, might that make up for it a little bit? This grade is really the only thing dragging me down.
