Davis I see as possible if he raises his SAT scores a good bit...His chances, however, are better at UCSC, UCR, and UCM. I think he should apply to all four schools, since all you have to do is check off the boxes on the same application. While you may disagree, UC Riverside and UC Merced are not bad schools, even if they aren't as prestigious as some other UC's.

You might want to consider Cal Poly Pomona (I assumed you were talking about SLO up until now), because about 40-50% of the students they accept have GPAs lower than your son's. By the sound of it, his SAT scores would be above the average there. SLO is possible, but it will be harder to get into. You might also want to consider one "safety school" from the CSU system...I would reccommend San Francisco State, as they don't have a bad business program, even if it isn't Wharton. CSU Sacremento and Sonoma State are other possible options.

Santa Clara University, by the looks of it, is going to be a challenge. They have accepted students with worse GPAs and test scores, but they've rejected far more. The average SAT score is in the 1200's somewhere. There is no harm in applying, and he could be accepted, but don't get your hopes up.

I hope these suggestions help, but really, don't worry: I am sure your son is smart, even if his grades don't show it entirely, and that if he works hard, he will succeed in college and move on to greater things in life.

To summarize:

UCLA/UCB/UCSD: Big Reaches
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Reaches
UCSC: Match, possibly a slight reach just because of GPA
UCR/UCM: Matches
Cal Poly SLO: Reach
Cal Poly Pomona: Match
Sonoma State/CSU Sacramento/San Francisco State: Safeties
Santa Clara University: Reach
