Hey all,

Imm looking for a college, as close to NYC as possible, that will allow me to do a graduate program in archeology in some form. Probably a masters...reason being I have a bachelors and masters in computer science, but nothing in or related to archaeology. If anyone could reccomend which college I could applyt to that it will admit me because i have an undergrad and good gre test scores, even though my undergrad isnt in archaeology.

Cheers

Don't worry. Many students, even those coming from prestigious colleges, have little to no coursework in archaeology before starting a graduate program, and computer science is becoming very important in many fields. Lacking a strong background in a foreign language or two might hurt, though.

Staying in New York, you can't do better than NYU or Columbia. Cornell has a good Masters program, but it's a bit further away from NYC. SUNY Stony Brook also has an archaeology program, but I don't know much about it.

U Penn (various programs), Princeton (joint with art history), Yale (MA only), Harvard, and Brown also have excellent programs, but they're very difficult to get into. Bryn Mawr, Penn State, and Boston U might be a little easier to get into. Slightly further away, GWU and Johns Hopkins have good programs. MIT has a sort of archaeology-engineering grad program that might fit your CS background.

When I take the GRE, I am expecting to get quite a high mark, probably more on the verbal, which will help. NYU and Columbia are my ideal options, I just dont know if I could go into a PHD program straight off..., I am unclear on if I have to get accepted to a PhD to be able to take the masters.

The cornel masters of art in archaeology seems ideal, and I could maybe transfer to a PhD later on.

Ideally im looking at NYU and Columbia because I want to be based in NYC, but from my understanding cornell seems more realistic.

Do you know if there is any possibility of applying to NYU and Columbia for comp sci and archaeology with one application...I would prefer not tp pay 2 applciations fees, its already at about $500 so far with just 4 universites because of the exchange rate.

Do you have more info on the archaeology program at MIT?

the archaeology related course at mit seems interesting, but i dont have the background in phsyics etc that it seems to require., i have asked for more information however

realisticlly, what are my chances of columbia or nyu to do archaeology, without the background? im worried because there top schools..ive league and all.

could the cornell masters be used to go straight into a phd program at nyu or columbia, or harvard?

cheers,
i really appreciate your responses

i found this on columbias webpage...does this rule out columbia as a choice?

Generally applicants are expected to have taken a minimum of four undergraduate courses in art history, archaeology or other fields related to art history. Reading knowledge of two or three foreign languages is strongly recommended. Demonstration of proficiency in at least one language is required during the first year of study.

and on the nyu page:

Can I apply for an MA Degree in Anthropology?

The Department only admits students for doctoral (Ph.D.) study, with the exceptions of our new MA Program in Human Skeletal Biology (physical anthropology, see below). There is no other freestanding M.A. program; this degree is earned in the course of Ph.D. study.

so it apepars there is no ma program, and without the background I probably could not apply to the PhD?

nyu is definitly out, confirmed via email

the statement on columbias page seems to rule out columbia...

Hmm, sorry about Columbia. Don't give up on NYU, though. I was referring to the art history department rather than anthropology.

Try contacting David O'Connor. He's a world-class professor and pretty helpful.

A question- why are you looking for an MA program? Relatively few places offer MAs as a terminal degree, and you often have less funding than you would for a PhD.

I just heard back from nyu that the IFA program is even more selective. Seems that nyu is out for archaeology as well.

Cornell it is
