Hi - I am currently interested in majoring in Musicology for my graduate studies. I plan on pursuing both the Master’s and PhD. I am looking for suggestions as to what schools have well-respected Musicology programs. I am also looking for the ability to still play in the school’s ensembles and take lessons with the applied teacher, as well as other performance opportunities. My gpa is a 3.7, I have studied Spanish and will be studying Italian. I am currently a Music Education major, and I hope that it will help me become a TA at a graduate program.
There are many schools you could consider. Are there particular locations you would prefer? Do you want a conservatory/school of music for a DMA or a university PhD (just making sure)?
If you have done practice teaching in a classroom, you have already tried out your “teacher voice” so it might help you be less nervous and more effective. But most TA’s haven’t done music education and do fine, with the training provided by the school.
The main issue may be financial. Do you need a fully funded master’s? Some programs have terminal master’s and some have master’s that are part of the PhD and so aren’t terminal. You can most likely get funding for the PhD, with a TA stipend, but a terminal master’s can be pricey.
Grad café is another resource. There are some musicology candidates on there.
Have you looked at websites? Consulted with a teacher? Talked with peers?
I would love to suggest schools but would need more info. Others may come on with specific schools for you to look into. Hope so!
Hi! I would want to go through the PhD route, with hopefully a career in teaching at a collegiate level. I’m not looking at a particular area at the moment, so I am up for anywhere! I would probably be looking at a program where the Master’s is part of the PhD, because finances are a major issue. I have been looking into programs recently and have talked to faculty, but I am just looking for general suggestions about programs.
